Despite growing awareness of the
benefits of a ‘paperless office’, paper
is still required for many processes
and administrative tasks. The
challenge many business face is how
to reduce the environmental impact
of persistent print.
Epson has responded to this challenge
in a truly unique fashion by creating a
machine that turns waste into new paper.

production in 2016, initially for the Japanese

market, is believed to be the world’s first
office paper-making system capable of
producing new paper from securely shredded
waste paper, without the use of water.
A great example of Epson innovation,
PaperLab performs three main functions:
on-site paper recycling, which removes
the need to transport waste to a central
recycling facility;
secure shredding for the on-site disposal
of confidential documents; and
the manufacture of various types, sizes
and thickness of paper, from A4 and A3
printer paper to business cards. Paper can
even be coloured and scented. The system
can produce about 14 A4 sheets per minute,
or 6,720 sheets in an eight-hour day.
PaperLab uses Epson’s Dry Fiber
Technology, consisting of three functions:
fiberising, which turns waste paper into
long, thin cotton-like fibres; binding – the
addition of binders to strengthen, whiten,
colour or perfume the fibre; and forming to
produce sheets of paper and card with full
control over the density, thickness and size
of paper.
Significantly, Dry Fiber Technology
enables paper to be recycled and
manufactured without water. This has both
an environmental benefit and a practical
one, as, with no need for a plumbed-in
water supply, PaperLab can be placed
wherever is most convenient.
Epson hopes that PaperLab will change
the paper cycle, stimulate recycling and
change the way businesses think about
paper.
In 2016 Epson introduced its Print
365 managed print service (MPS), a
fully-serviced printing package with
fixed fees designed for SMEs. For
sale through IT Resellers, Print365
takes the simplicity of a mobile
phone contract and applies this to
a managed print service. Everything
is wrapped into a single monthly

interventions, to be three and a half times
faster to print the first page, to reduce
energy consumption by up to 82% and to
