WHAT’S NEW
Simple
management
Canon claims its new flagship
A3 colour MFPs help reduce
print costs by simplifying
print management and
administration through
automatic toner management,
remote diagnostics/
management, video assistance
and improved security.
Smart MEAP and MEAP web
application platforms integrate
seamlessly with existing IT
environments for streamlined
document workflows. The
imageRUNNER ADVANCE
C3320, C3320i, C3325i and
C3330i have colour and B&W
print speeds of up to 30ppm.
Is 3D printing bad
for your health?
Clean Strands has started a
Kickstarter campaign to raise
funding for emissions testing
and certification of plastic
filament used in 3D printing.
The LA-based company
argues that although PLA
and ABS plastic emits fumes
when heated in a 3D printer,
very little research has been
done into the effect on indoor
air quality.
Clean Strands plans to work
with the Built Environment
Research Group (BERG) at
Illinois Institute of Technology
to find out what chemicals are
being emitted into the air and
in what concentrations. Testing
will measure ultra-fine particles
and total volatile organic
compounds produced by PLA
and ABS filaments.
It will also work with Ramboll
ENVIRON, a environmental
consultancy specialising in air
emissions, to set standards for
safe indoor air quality when
3D printing. Plastic filament
that is deemed to be safe will
be awarded the Clean Strands
Seal of Approval.
Testing and certification
is scheduled to begin in
September, with results made
public by the end of the year.
Mobile printing for all
International Paper, manufacturer of the HP Everyday
Papers range, has brought out a free mobile printing app
to simplify printing from any Android/iOS smartphone or
tablet to any wireless printer. Developed in conjunction
with Dynamix US, LLC, Happy2Print can be used to print
Microsoft Office documents, images, photos, web pages
and email and attachments. Users of Android phones
can also print contacts, file browsing, calendar, call log
and text messages.
Twice the
performance
As it seeks to strengthen
its presence in the office
automation channel,
Panasonic has announced a
new MFP for the small office,
home office market.
The DP-MB311 represents
a big increase in performance
compared to Panasonic’s
existing DP-MB310 MFP.
Highlights include duplex
printing at close to the rated
speed, more memory (768MB
vs. 64MB) and a doubling of
both the duty cycle (to 100,000
pages per month) and print
resolution (to 1200 x 1200 dpi).
In addition, the DP-MB311
features WiFi and Gigabit
connectivity and supports
mobile and remote printing
from smartphones and tablets.
An ECO button offers easy
access to paper and power-
saving settings.

Scan and identify
TrustID is using the ABBYY
FineReader Engine to process
national driving licences
as part of its TVS identity
validation solution. The ABBYY
recognition platform offers
Optical Character Recognition
(OCR); Intelligent Character
Recognition (ICR); barcode,
checkmark, field-level/zonal
recognition; and conversion
of scans and images into
searchable and editable
documents. Once a document
is scanned, TrustID TVS
identifies it as a UK driving
licence and then reads the
required data fields, such
as name, date of birth and
document number. Data is
validated and checked and the
results presented to the user.
