More than just a
gesture
Mobilephoneusersmight soonbe
able tooperate their devices through
simplehandgestures, following
a technological breakthroughby
researchers at theUniversityof
Warwick.
Software developed at theUniversity
turns 2D cameras onmobile phones
and tablet computers intohand gesture
recognition (HGR) devices thatwill work
inuncontrolled environments innatural
and artificial light.
CurrentHGR technologies used in
smartTVs and gaming consoles require
infraredor 3D cameras andonlywork in
artificial light.
The breakthroughmakes it possible
tooperate deviceswhen touching is
impractical, for examplewhen cooking,
driving and perhaps even in the
operating theatre.
Commenting on the software, Dr
Shum Prakash, business development
manager atWarwickVentures, said:
“The gesture recognition sector needs
new, innovative products that address
the problemswith existing technology
and can be easily applied in people’s
day-to-day lives. Because it can be
usedon deviceswe already own, this
new technology solves bothof these
problems and could lead toHGR
technology becoming an integral part of
the automotive, health and consumer
electronic sectors.”
WarwickVentures has filed a patent
application to PCT (International) Stage
and is now seeking commercial partners
to bring the technology tomarket.
