I love going to these things and standing around talking to people.’ So said EKM Group’s Ian Silvester when I spoke to him about Technology Live 2023, taking place in London on September 12 (see page 19). He’s being harsh on himself. Plenty of people would agree that meeting prospects and catching up with existing customers and suppliers is a good use of time that can also be enjoyable. In fact, according to a recent survey by etc.venues, admittedly an owner of 500,000 square feet of meeting/conferencing space, 99% of event planners now value face-to-face meetings more than (or as much as) they did before the pandemic. This is up from 82% a year ago, which suggests that people are getting real benefits from being in the same room as customers/prospects/ suppliers. Technology Live 2023 aims to optimise the cost:return ratio for exhibitors and visitors alike by providing a compact one-day event, minimising time out of the office, where vendors from across the ICT spectrum can meet existing contacts and forge new relationships with resellers/MSPs looking to diversify into new areas. Even if you are quite happy with your existing business relationships, there is great value in attending events like Tech Live just to be part of a wider community with shared challenges and experiences. In this issue, we hear from a number of advocates of community-building, including Network Group’s David Tulip (page 32), whose top tip for MSPs in 2023 is ‘to go and find your people’, and Coterie’s Helen Curtis (page 34), who has set up a new community to support partner marketers – a large but under-represented and perhaps under-appreciated group that is becoming ever more important to vendors and channel organisations with the rise of the ‘as a service’ model and customised solutions involving multiple brands. In-person gatherings are crucial to both organisations. Industry awards ceremonies are obviously another great occasion for people to get together and at Kingswood Media we are looking forward to welcoming hundreds of people from the ICT sector to the Technology Reseller Awards, taking place on May 25. You still have about four weeks to submit an entry and I would urge everyone to do so. You may win an award, but even if you don’t the exercise can be beneficial. I was talking to a marketing person from a large distributor who said that she had been able to provide masses of detail in response to a customer query only because she had already gathered that information for an awards entry. Turn to page 20 for more about the awards. Good luck with your entry! Channel leaders confident of ability to recruit and retain skilled staff Despite the widely acknowledged shortage of workers with good IT skills, the latest channel insight report from channel services provider Agilitas IT Solutions suggests that business leaders in the IT channel are optimistic about their ability to attract and retain talent. Almost two thirds (64%) of the 250 leaders working in UK-headquartered technology companies with more than £5 million in turnover surveyed for the EVOLVE for Your People report gave their ability to recruit skilled staff a rating of 8 out of 10 or above, contributing to an overall confidence rating of 7.8. When asked how confident they were that they had the right recruitment policies in place to appeal to potential recruits, business leaders returned a rating of 7.6, up from 7.3 in 2021. Channel leaders are also confident that they have the workplace culture to support the long-term retention of staff (7.9). When asked to select three things that could most improve workplace culture, the top rated initiatives were: hybrid and remote working (39.2%), diversity and inclusion (32.4%), team building/ social activities (31.2%), company-wide communication (30%) and responding to employee feedback (29%). Panaseer found that teams now spend 59% of their time on these tasks – a 9% increase on the previous year’s research and a 64% rise from the first survey in 2019. Overall, 70% of security teams spend more than half of their time on manual reporting, leaving less time for threat detection and vulnerability patching. Andreas Wuchner, Field CISO at Panaseer, said: “To reduce the significant amount of time spent manually reporting, CISOs and their teams need to be looking to automation. As well as freeing up qualified security professionals to dedicate time to higher value tasks – from threat detection to business continuity planning – automation provides the road to accurate, trustworthy data. We need to prioritise the maturation of automation, metrics and risk management in order to help teams cope with heavy reporting workloads.” Worst year yet for cyber attacks A surge in cyberattacks in the final three months of last year made 2022 the worst year on record for malicious online activity against UK businesses, according to Beaming, the business internet service provider (ISP). Its analysis shows that UK companies experienced an average of 687,489 online attempts to breach their systems in 2022, surpassing the previous record of 686,961 attempts set in 2020. October to December 2022 was the busiest quarter for cyberattacks on UK businesses since Beaming began tracking malicious web activity in 2016, with companies experiencing an average of 177,228 cyberattacks each in the quarter. Almost 1.2 million IP addresses were used to launch cyberattacks on UK businesses in 2022, according to Beaming, more than one fifth of which are in China (268,484 locations). Other prime launching pads include the USA (90,663), India (46,783), Brazil (46,783), Russia (35,842) and Taiwan (30,581). Roles in customer service are the most likely to be automated (cited by 70%), followed by IT operations (62%), sales and marketing (57%), business operations (56%) and HR and admin (56%). With two thirds (65%) of companies finding it difficult to fill technical vacancies and a similar proportion (62%) struggling to retain IT staff, UK companies are now investing 1.5 times more money in roles performed by technology than those performed by people. This trend is supported by growing confidence in technology’s return on investment among senior leaders. Drivers of Change: Pure Storage IT Sustainability Impact Sur vey 2022 reveals that half of UK companies are behind on their sustainability goals, despite 73% treating sustainability initiatives as a priority. One reason is the amount of energy consumed by IT, with 90% of UK sustainability program directors doubting whether organisations will be able to reach their sustainability goals without a significant reduction in IT infrastructure energy usage. Instead, 76% expect the impact of technology infrastructure on their companies’ carbon footprint to grow over the next 12 months. The report attributes significant blame to IT teams, with 63% of UK respondents saying that vendors’ sustainability credentials tend to be overlooked during the vendor selection process and 64% say sustainability managers only become involved once the purchasing process has already begun. One third of respondents identified IT as the function least likely to take steps to support their company’s sustainability goals. www.purestorage.com · · · · · · Act now to reduce IT stress levels, says CAE IT professionals are dismissive of employer attitudes to security, which they say is adding considerably to stress levels, reveals new research commissioned by IT infrastructure solutions provider CAE Technology Services Ltd (CAE). In its survey of 200 IT professionals working in UK organisations where the IT function supports 250-2,499 users, only 7% of respondents said security was at the forefront of their organisation’s thinking, even though 92% agree that security risks have increased in the last five years and 62% say they are under more pressure through a combination of security risks and pressure from employers. More than half (53%) say they feel more stressed about security concerns at work, with 48% complaining that rapid/ forced deployment of new tools as a result of hybrid working has created challenges around security. Four in 10 complain of insufficient resources and training. Dene Lewis, Head of Technical Strategy and Direction at CAE, said: “We’ve seen a real sea-change in security architectures and hybrid working impacting how organisations manage their IT security and those who provide it. From cloud workloads to steaming water Imagine if the heat generated by your cloud workloads could provide free hot water for households. This is the possibility being explored by Civo, a cloud native service provider, in partnership with heata, a green distributed compute network which originated as a British Gas project to help people living in fuel poverty. The two companies are conducting a pilot programme under which Civo customers will be given the option to run offline batch cloud compute workloads (high-volume, repetitive data jobs that don’t require real-time processing) on heata’s network of small compute servers attached to domestic hot water cylinders in people’s homes. The waste heat generated by these servers, which in data centres would require air conditioning to cool, is instead used to heat the water in the cylinder, transferred via heata’s patented thermal bridge technology. Each server can produce up to 4.8kWh per day, which at average utilisation levels could meet 80% of the host household’s hot water needs at no cost, saving 1 tonne of carbon per year and using 56% less electricity than a typical data centre plus separate water heating. Data centres are projected to generate 1.8 gigatonnes of CO2 and use 8% of global electricity by 2030. Currently, 2060% of a data centre’s energy is spent on air conditioning. Heata servers are quick and simple to install and have no impact on the heating system warranty. Chris Jordan, Co-founder and CTO of heata, said: “Our mission is to unlock the value of the waste heat from compute, turning a compute problem into a climate and social benefit. Working with partners like Civo is critical as we look to extend our network, building trust and inspiring more organisations to run their compute workloads in a more sustainable way.” Heata.co · · · · · · 5G to unlock connected vehicle use cases The number of connected vehicles in service globally is expected to more than double over the next four years, from 192 million vehicles in 2023 to 367 million in 2027, according to a new report from Juniper Research (Connected Vehicles: Operator Opportunities, Competitor Leaderboard & Market Forecasts 2023-2027). Connected vehicles are defined as vehicles equipped with communication technologies that allow the exchange of information between various elements of the transport system and third-party services. Their growth is being driven by advances in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and the capabilities of in-vehicle infotainment systems. The report’s authors identify the high speed and low-latency of 5G as critical to unlocking use cases, such as autonomous driving and data-heavy infotainment via 5G, with 5G set to account for 23% of automotive cellular connections globally in 2027. The research predicts that by 2027 commercial vehicles will account for 20% of connected vehicles worldwide, up from 16% by the end of 2023. While commercial vehicle design is currently not leveraging connectivity beyond simple emergency call features and basic connected infotainment systems, this is starting to change as businesses prioritise fleet tracking and logistics capabilities. https://www.juniperresearch.com/ whitepapers/why-operators-are-drivingconnected-vehicles · · · · · · Microsoft and LinkedIn training Microsoft and LinkedIn are hoping to plug the skills gap by providing free access to 350 courses and launching six new Career Essentials Certificates for the most in-demand jobs in the digital economy (in a choice of seven languages). It differs from other finance or leasing options in that, as well as allowing customers to invest in new technology solutions right away, it provides several options for the end of the agreement. Customers can either return the equipment, roll it on at the same rate, extend for 12 or 24 months, or make a one-off final fee and have indefinite use of the equipment. All options are embedded into the agreement and are set out clearly at the start. Currently being used successfully for manufacturing, healthcare and retail and distribution, the ecosystems programme is designed to help partners with skills and specialisations in different areas to share experiences, ideas and best practices and potentially forge mutually beneficial commercial partnerships. Participants will be able to draw on services and support provided by the TD SYNNEX security practice, including Security Practice Builder, which helps resellers establish their own cybersecurity services business, and the RECON Security Suite of managed and subscription-based services covering identity and access management, security consulting, SOCaaS and backup and recovery. Alison Nixon, Security Business Unit Director at TD SYNNEX, UK, said: “There is a multiplicity of reseller businesses, solutions integrators, service providers and specialists in all the different areas of digital security, but few, if any, have the knowledge and skills they need to offer a complete cybersecurity offering to their end user customers. In addition to that, cybersecurity skills can only be acquired at a huge premium right now. These are significant challenges for partners and one very good way of addressing them is through partnering. “The Cybersecurity Ecosystems community will provide a valuable forum through which partners can explore new possibilities and the different pathways and options that we provide for them to develop their security and data protection business.” https://uk.tdsynnex.com/

The rebrand, which introduces a distinctive black and white logo in which the word Software is incorporated into the word One, can be seen on the company’s global website today and will be rolled out locally across SoftwareOne’s 90 markets over the coming months. Since 2018, SoftwareOne has expanded its professional and managed services portfolio organically and via acquisitions, adding over 5,500 new employees and tripling in size. Today, the company offers cloud and application services, SAP services, digital workplaces, security and FinOps, as well as commercial software offerings such as IT Asset Management (ITAM), software sourcing and software publisher advisory. SoftwareOne has also developed vertical expertise in the construction, finance, government and non-profit sectors. Dieter Schlosser, CEO of SoftwareOne, said: “Our new brand reflects the all-inone provider we have become. The way organisations buy and manage software has been changing for years, driven by the move to cloud and an everything-asa-service model. Drawing on our strong foundation and licensing expertise, we have built a holistic offering and an exceptional team of experts to serve our clients along their entire cloud journeys.” www.softwareone.com IWG Ensono extension IWG, owner of leading co-working and serviced office brands like Regus, Spaces, HQ and Signature, has extended its 15-year partnership with Ensono by three more years to accelerate the migration of its business applications to a new cloud-based solution that will facilitate the provision of personalised digital services to customers. Ensono.com • www.iwgplc.com Aliter Capital LLP, a specialist investor focused on small to mid-size UK support services businesses, has acquired the network connectivity and IT managed services provider ITM Communications Ltd (ITM). The investment secures a third platform business in Aliter’s £134m second fund, Aliter Capital II, completed in December 2022. Based in Milton Keynes and with 85 employees, ITM specialises in supporting ICT infrastructure with expert capabilities in five areas – cabled & wireless connectivity, physical infrastructure, converged IP, offsite staging and logistics, and site technical services. ITM’s current management team of Mike Jackson, Mark Barber and Lynda Ayris, who led an MBO of the business in 2010, will remain in place, assisted by Aliter partner Greig Brown, who has joined the ITM board as a non-executive director. ITM Director Mark Barber said: “We have been aware of Aliter for some time and having seen what they achieved with North, a business operating in sectors similar to ITM, we believe strongly the added support of the right investment partner with significant experience and resources will help us accelerate the next stage of ITM’s development.” North, a networking and connectivity provider, was acquired by Aliter in 2018 and sold in 2021 after four acquisitions in three years had increased revenues to £45m and headcount to 265. Greig Brown added: “ITM is a great example of the type of business we are looking to back, where we can use our sector expertise to support future growth. We have a strong track record in this sector and see clear potential to grow this business, both organically and through bolt-on acquisitions.” www.itm.uk.com • www.alitercap.com atom partners with Pragma Newcastle-based atom technology solutions, founded in 2021, has added iPECS Cloud and complementary Ericsson-LG services from distributor Pragma to its offering for customers in the North of England and Scotland. Dean Cowens, Managing Director of atom technology solutions, said: “Working with Pragma and Ericsson-LG Enterprise was a no-brainer. We have previously worked with the team, and some of our clients have deployed their solutions. The award recognises Ionize’s achievement in growing its Webex business to 35 customers, from a standing start in November 2021, and adding to its initial focus on Webex Calling with the addition of Webex Contact Centre. In its citation for the award Cisco noted how, even though it was brand new to Webex Calling, Ionize became certified, placed its first order and had the customer up and running within five days, adding an additional 20 orders within just 8 weeks. Ionize MD Kristian Ellmore said: “We honestly could not have done this without the support of (distributor) TD SYNNEX, particularly in the early stages when we needed to get accredited as quickly as possible. They have been excellent at navigating us through the administration and ordering side of things. “I imagine there are probably quite a few partners who for whatever reason don’t want to take on Webex work and it would be a shame for those partners to miss those opportunities, even if they are only for a single user. I think that’s where we can help, by partnering with them and leveraging the support that TD SYNNEX can provide, to help them expand their business.” https://www.ionize.co.uk/
