Inflexibility causes loss of skilled staff
Over a fifth of working mothers have been forced to leave their jobs after
a flexible working request was turned down, according to the 2015 Annual
Survey byWorkingmums.co.uk.
More than one third (38%) of those still on maternity leave said they would
not return to their jobs if flexible working wasn’t granted, with 47% unsure what
they would do.
The survey shows that many employers are failing to retain the skills of
working mothers after maternity leave, with 62% returning from maternity
leave to a new job.

Label it or lose it
Six out of 10 businesses have a
problem with pilfering and the
‘borrowing’ of stationery items from
people’s desks, according to a survey
of 1,000 office workers conducted
by Avery as part of its second annual
Hands Off Week 2015 (September
14-18).
It’s not just small items that get
taken either. In addition to pens,
staplers and other stationery items,
respondents complained that they had
lost paperwork, calculators and phone
chargers. One in four said that in the
last year laptops, tablets and mobile
phones had also gone missing.
Light-fingered colleagues are not to
blame for all losses. Often, the fault lies
with the owners of the missing property,
with almost half of Brits admitting to
losing or leaving behind something
important and never getting it back.
Avery’s Fiona Mills said: “Realising
something important has been left
behind or gone missing, especially
at work, is frustrating at best and in
the worst cases can actually affect a
company’s ability to work effectively. In
fact, 14% of the businesses we spoke
to said important equipment or tools
of the trade go missing several times a
year.”
She points out that there are simple
steps that businesses can take to deter
theft and improve the chances of lost
property being returned to the rightful
owner, from effective signage to the
labelling of company property. Over
half of respondents believe labelling
acts as a deterrent to thieves.
Some of the stranger items reported
missing or stolen from UK workplaces
include a shed, an office chair, a
chainsaw, a stress ball and hairnets.
Almost a third of office workers have
also had food taken from the fridge,
their desks, lunchboxes and the
company kitchen.
Middle ranking employees were the
most likely culprits in almost a quarter
of cases, followed by bosses who were
found to be responsible in 17% of cases.

Employees fear being judged when sick
Almost one quarter (23%) of employees don’t tell their line manager the real
reason for their absence when calling in sick for fear that they will be judged
unfairly. A further 15% say they’re afraid they won’t be believed. A survey by
AXA PPP healthcare suggests such fears might be justified, as only 42% of senior
managers polled agreed that flu is a serious enough reason for an employee to be
absent from work.
