Giveup smoking
–and savemoney
Toyota& Lexus Fleet Services
took advantage ofNo Smoking
Day onMarch12 to encourage
drivers andmanagers of company
vehicles to switch from smoke-
emitting diesel to cleaner petrol-
electric hybrid power.Neil Broad,
GeneralManager ofToyota&
Lexus Fleet Services, said:“Diesel-
engine vehicles are amajor source
of harmful pollution.With a petrol
full hybrid, particulate emissions
are entirely eliminated and
nitrogenoxide (NOx) levels are
on average a tenthof the diesel
limit set by the forthcoming
Euro6 legislation.”Petrol hybrids
also save thousands of pounds
on tax, fuel andwhole life costs.
As an example,Toyota& Lexus
Fleet Services says that a Lexus
CT200h Swill save companies
£4,000 in a typical three-year,
60,000mile cycle compared to a
diesel equivalent.The driverwill
save £2,000 in personal tax.

Tax-efficientUPS
Eaton’s newmodular double conversion
three-phaseUPSswith power ratings of
up to200kWhave been includedon the
EnergyTechnology List (ETL)managedby
TheCarbonTrust. Under the Enhanced
CapitalAllowance (ECA) scheme,
users of ETL-approved energy-saving
equipment can claim100%of purchase
and installation costs against tax in the
first year.The 93PM ‘pay-as-you-grow’
UPSs combine energy efficiency of up
to97%with amodular design that lets
you scale the system as load demands
change.An Energy Saver System (ESS)
continuouslymatchesUPS operation to
the demands of the incoming power. This
eliminates redundant power usage for an
energy efficiency rating of 99%. Eaton’s
complete range of 93PMUPSs are now
representedon the ETL alongside its
9395UPS range.
The convenience of single-serve
coffee capsules comes at a
high price, according toBiome
Bioplastics, developer of the
world’s first compostable coffee
pod. It claims that in theUS
alone 9.1 billion single-serve
coffee and drink cartridges,
taking up19million cubic feet
of waste, endup in landfill every
year.As a sustainable alternative
tomixedmaterial pods and
inefficient recycling services,
theUK developer of natural
plastics has created a range of
biodegradable coffee pods using
bio-plastics derived from plant
starches and tree by-products.

Honey, I shrunk theCHP
ENER-Ghas shrunk its 50kW
combinedheat and power (CHP)
unit by 30%. Designed for use in
cities,where space andnoise are
limiting factors, the E50 gas-fired
CHP packs the same power, 90%
efficiency, reliability andquiet
operation as its predecessor,
but takes up less space. It also
requires less power and fewer
resources tomanufacture and
transport.Typical applications
are in small hotels,mixeduse
developments and small district
heating schemes. Under ENER-
G’sDiscount Energy Purchase
scheme, the customer doesn’t
pay any purchase, installationor
operational cost. Instead, payment
is recovered through the purchase
of generatedheat and electricity
at a guaranteed rate.
Recharge for re-use
Panasonic eneloop rechargeable batteriesmarry the performance of
dry cellswith the cost-efficiency and sustainability of rechargeable
batteries. They can be rechargedup to2,100 times and are supplied
pre-charged and ready for use. Low self-discharge ratesmean that even
after five years of non-use the batteries retain70%of their power.
The new range includes a charger and threemodels of battery:
eneloop standard; eneloop pro, for power-hungry
equipment; and eneloop lite,
for low power devices.
