WHAT’S NEW
Virtual meeting space
Microsoft is promising more productive meetings and easier
collaboration with the Microsoft Surface Hub. Available in 55-
and 84-inch versions, the large-screen remote meeting and
collaboration device is designed to transform the way groups
work together just as the PC revolutionised personal productivity.
It comprises a cloud-connected Windows 10 device; a screen
capable of detecting 100 points of multi-touch and up to three
simultaneous pen inputs; dual 1080p front-facing video cameras;
a four-element microphone array that detects and follows voice
during video-conferencing sessions; and built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
4.0 and NFC that make it easy to share content from wireless
devices. Microsoft says anyone can walk up to the Surface Hub
and start using it for white-boarding, to initiate a video-conference
or to share content from wired or wireless devices.
Made for archiving
Brother is entering the
departmental scanner market
with the launch of PDS-5000
and PDS-6000. Designed for
organisations scanning up to
6,000 pages a day, both models
are Kofax VRS compatible,
making them suitable for
archiving applications in the
healthcare, government and
financial services sectors.
More than a pen
More than just a 3D printing
pen, the 3D Simo is the
ultimate creator’s tool – at
least that’s how 3D Simo
describes it. It comes with a
range of extensions and heat
settings (up to 490 degrees C)
that turn it from an ordinary
3D printing pen into a creative
multi-purpose tool. These
include extensions for burning,
foam cutting and soldering.
Material and temperature
settings can be controlled
wirelessly by smartphone app.
Enhanced
collaboration
Sharp has released a new
version of its Cloud Portal Office
(CPO) secure document sharing
and collaboration solution.
CPO v1.3 has a number of
enhancements including the
ability to share files securely with
non-subscribers using time-
limited links; email notifications
informing colleagues that
a document is available for
viewing; and mobile access to
files on smartphones, tablets
and laptops. Jason Cort,
European director of product
planning and marketing at
Sharp, said: “CPO is a robust
and secure cloud collaboration
solution specifically for
businesses, putting them firmly
back in control of documents
throughout their lifecycle, while
giving employees the flexibility
they need to work together
wherever they are.”
Only one’s a winner
Conference bags handed out to
delegates at the Cannes Lions
2015 festival of creativity held on
June 21-27 contained individually
printed notebooks created to
demonstrate the BrandOpus
concept of Eachness – the art
of creating visual distinctiveness
that makes brands memorable.
Using the Mosaic application of
HP SmartStream Designer and
six base patterns, BrandOpus
and HP produced 12,000
individual notebooks each with
its own edition number, one of
which was linked to a prize of a
hamper and free use of the HP
SmartStream Designer Mosaic
application for a single consumer
campaign. The notebooks were
printed on an HP Indigo 10000
Digital Press.
Plug and play
mobile printing
Lantronix describes the
new version of its Lantronix
xPrintServer Office as the first
Apple and Google-certified
print server to provide AirPrint
and Google Cloud Print for
enterprise and office printers.
The size of an iPhone, it offers
secure, app-free printing from
iPhones, iPads, Chromebooks
and Android smartphones/
tablets to thousands of printers
and MFPs. The plug-and-play
architecture allows IT managers
to auto-provision print devices
to support AirPrint and
Google Cloud Print simply by
connecting the xPrintServer to
a network switch or router.
