Cloud-based payroll
for small businesses
Payroll and accountancy solutions
provider IRIS Software has
broadened its cloud software
portfolio with the launch of a new
cloud-based payroll solution for
small and medium-sized businesses.
IRIS OpenPayroll lets businesses
manage payrolls in compliance with
HMRC requirements, including RTI
submissions.
Mark Paraskeva, CEO of IRIS SME
Division, said: “The introduction of
RTI this year was the biggest single
change to payroll in 70 years and IRIS
OpenPayroll was created specifically
to handle RTI requirements. RTI
submissions are sent automatically to
HMRC, giving the user one less thing
to worry about.”
Designed to be easy to use, IRIS
OpenPayroll has an intuitive step-
by-step wizard, so you can run your
first payroll without any training or
support. Employees can access the
system and update their details, such
as address and bank account numbers,
and retrieve their own payslips without
incurring further costs to the employer.
As a cloud service, IRIS OpenPayroll
enables 24/7 access from anywhere
in the world via an internet-enabled
mobile, tablet or PC. It is compliant
with UK data protection legislation
and automatically backs up data.

Energy harvesting
mobile screen
The need for back-up power
supplies could be greatly reduced
in the future, following the
development of Wysips by French
engineering firm Sunpartner.
Standing for What You See Is
Photovoltaic Surface,Wysips can
transform any surface, including a
smartphone screen, into an energy-
producing medium.
Sunpartner claims that Wysips
Crystal, an ultra-thin, 90% transparent,
photovoltaic component that sits
beneath a screen, supplies enough
energy to keep a phone permanently
charged. It is invisible to the naked eye
and has no impact on screen contrast,
readability, viewing angle or luminosity.
In August Sunpartner signed an
agreement with TCL Communication
to develop smartphone prototypes
powered by solar and artificial light.
TCL Communications is the world’s
seventh largest manufacturer of
smartphones including Alcatel One
Touch phones.

Healthy outlook for
fitness apps
Juniper Research expects the number of
people using fitness and health devices
linked to smartphone apps to reach
nearly 100 million by 2018, up from 15
million this year.
Its report,
Mobile Health & Fitness:
Monitoring, App-enabled Devices & Cost
Savings 2013-2018
, suggests that the
fitness market will take-off first, increasing
awareness of the much larger market for
mHealth applications, such as remote
patient monitoring.
Typical of the former is Fitbit Flex,
a wireless wristband that tracks steps
taken, distance travelled, calories burned
and sleep patterns. Activity stats can be
transferred to an iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad
and Samsung Galaxy S4 using built-in
Bluetooth 4.0. The Flex’s LED display subtly
vibrates each time a new goal is achieved.
It costs £79.99.
