Social network to help
commuters avoid delays
A new type of travel information system that will
enable road and rail users to share information
about their journey and instantly update each
other about delays is under development at
Lancaster University.
The product of a £1.6m research project, Our Travel
aims to reduce congestion and help users fnd more
effcient ways to travel through an app that combines
social networking and direct input from transport
workers for up-to-the-minute travel news.
Professor Nigel Davies from the School of
Computing and Communications at the Universty’s
InfoLab21 said: “Our Travel enables commuters to
create a community of people who share the same
journey and who can update each other about, say,
a tree on the route or roadworks. You can check your
mobile and fnd out that someone else who has just
done your trip into work is reporting fooding under
the bridge or the wrong leaves on the track.”
In addition to information from travellers, Our
Travel will feature updates from transport workers
including warnings of roadworks, winter gritting and
line painting.
Our Travel is part funded by the Technology
Strategy Board, a business-led government body
sponsored by the Department for Business, Innovation
and Skills (BIS), and is being developed and trialled in
collaboration with In Touch Ltd and Carillion plc.
