With June 21, a little over a month away, there is still a great deal of uncertainty about the UK roadmap out of lockdown. Will all restrictions on social contact be lifted? Will we be able to go on holiday? Will we be able to attend industry events again? Many in the tech industry (but not all) have done pretty well over the last 15 months. DCC Technology is a case in point, with double-digit rises in operating profit and revenue, thanks in part to the diversity of its offering and specialisms (see page 16). And, with people returning to offices but also continuing to work from home some of the time, many vendors, resellers and MSPs that did well during the first lockdown are looking forward to going back into clients, tieing up loose ends and generally making things ship-shape. Tim Griffin at DCC has seen signs of a bounce in ProAV, with pent-up demand ready to generate a mini-boom, and, as we report on page 38, Jane Craven at EPOS is bullish about the prospects of upgrading headset users to better models, while also kitting out new meeting spaces in offices. On page 26, IGEL’s Simon Townsend makes the interesting point that in this new world of hybrid working, organisations will no longer have separate IT strategies for office-based and mobile work/workers. Instead, with employees moving freely between office, home and third spaces, they will need to have a unified strategy covering all usage scenarios. This, he suggests, is good news for IGEL, which aims to make its OS the de facto standard for accessing VDI and DaaS workspaces. Datto’s Greg Jones is confident that as organisations make these and other changes, they will be looking for a different relationship with MSPs, moving much more to a co-managed IT model, with a greater emphasis on consultancy (see page 18). This speaks to a greater truth, also highlighted by Distology’s Hayley Roberts in her ‘View from the Channel’ (page 24), which is that the channel is in many ways much more about people than technology.
