[email protected] COMMENT 03 Sometimes even I am amazed by my own stupidity – and, really, that’s something I should have got used to by now. A few weeks ago, new tenants moved into the office above mine and asked if they could hop onto my WiFi for a few days, until their router arrived. ‘Of course,’ I said. Since then, there has been a noticeable spike in phishing emails received and purportedly sent by me. I don’t know whether the two are linked, but clearly it was imprudent to share my router password and WiFi connection in this way. I mention this because I was recently discussing cyber security with Ricky Magalhaes from Logicalis and Jason Howells from Barracuda MSP, when Ricky made the point that today’s security solutions did a very good job and that there was nothing wrong with the technology, just the people that used it (or words to that effect). I found that comment, or at least the conviction with which it was expressed, surprising at the time. Now, I’m not so sure. Anticipating their need for broadband, my friends upstairs had actually bought a 4G dongle to tide them over ‘til their new router arrived. However, the download speeds were so inadequate that they felt compelled to explore other options. When we have good connectivity, it is easy to take it for granted, but the fact remains that despite all the options available, consistent, fast, high quality connectivity can be elusive. Which is why Nokia’s prediction that 5G will add $8 trillion to global GDP (see page 6) seems perfectly plausible. On pages 29 and 31, we look at how Cradlepoint, just acquired by Ericsson, is helping channel partners profit from 5G technology.
