One of the perils of editing a printed monthly, I’m afraid. What does seem clear, however, is that this crisis has the potential to change the nation’s working habits. The tools already exist to support home working; not just video-conferencing but also cloud workspaces where teams can collaborate on projects – a good example being the new Avaya Spaces app (see page 42). A solution like Citrix Workspace that enables users to access their desktop, applications and SaaS solutions from any device remotely and securely provides a more strategic solution that more and more enterprises are taking an interest in, as Pete Watson, CEO of Atlas Cloud explains in our interview on page 44. There is nothing new about homeworking as an emergency response to a crisis. Think back to all those rail strikes and freak weather events. The difference now is that instead of it being a brief, ad hoc arrangement, home working might be the status quo for months to come. As organisations approach it more strategically and make the necessary investment in technology, from IP phones to printers, home- working is likely to be normalised for swathes of the working population and could remain in place long after coronavirus has been conquered to help tackle the even greater crisis of climate change. Are we then to become a nation of recluses happy to stay in our home offices from dawn to dusk? Clearly not. One of the great challenges of self-isolation is that it runs counter to all our instincts. For all the benefits of modern technology, people still thirst for personal contact, which is as important in our business relationships as it is in our personal lives. This, of course, is why virtual exhibitions have never replaced physical events like Technology Live, which we will be bringing to the Business Design Centre, London on October 13. Featuring an exhibition and seminar programme, it will above all give MSPs, resellers, distributors and vendors the opportunity to make new contacts and renew existing relationships.
