If you are like me – and most of the nation – you will be pleased to see the back of 2019 and will be looking forward to what 2020 will bring. The election result brings the promise of greater stability and certainty, though on what basis it doesn’t pay to look too closely. For the time being, people are feeling remarkably optimistic and if that confidence is misplaced, does it matter? Collective myopia might not be such a bad thing – who’s to say lemmings don’t die happy? The IT channel is full of confident, optimistic people, which is one of the things that makes it such a great industry to be part of. Resellers and MSPs, even in the recent uncertain climate, have remained upbeat, as the latest CONTEXT ChannelWatch report reveals (see page 12). It is easy to see why. Just consider all the new technologies that are coming into play – 5G, IoT, AI, machine learning, blockchain etc. – and all the opportunities they present to enterprising resellers, VARs, ISVs and MSPs. The effects these emerging technologies will have on business in 2020 are considered by a cohort of IT experts on pages 28-31. It is not just the technologies of the future that have promise. There is also pent-up demand for more run- on-the-mill IT. A recent survey by Lenovo suggests that many office workers are desperate for new equipment, with 41% of those surveyed complaining that they don’t have the technology to support flexible working and 38% describing IT-related issues, such as long loading times and slow file transfers, as a major distraction. The good news is that more than three quarters of employers surveyed consider it a priority to improve the employee experience at work, which includes giving them the technology they need to do their jobs properly. Let’s hope that greater political certainty is reflected in this year’s IT budgets.
