It isn’t just a love of Lycra that motivates so many to run, hike and cycle (and hit a ball around) the lakes and dales and valleys and peaks of the UK – and often further afield – or a love of cakes that prompts so many to don an apron, find their inner Mary Berry and get baking. The IT industry has a history of supporting local and national causes with time, money, expertise, equipment, advice – and quite rightly enjoying the benefits that doing so can have on team-building, staff morale, company profile etc.. Sports-based and food-based fund-raising campaigns are great for mass participation and inspiring/ entertaining photo opportunities, but the IT channel and vendors also support their communities in other, quieter ways, for example through furthering the educational opportunities available to young people. The £5 million donation made by UKFast founders Lawrence and Gail Jones to the UKFast Community and Education Trust (see page 20) is astonishingly generous and will no doubt enhance, perhaps even change, the lives of many young people. So, too, will the 5,000 hours of volunteering that UKFast has committed to local causes. This is one way in which anyone in the IT industry with specialist skills can make a difference. The National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) wants to boost the number of young people studying computer sciences and recognises that business has a big role to play in developing pupils’ IT and coding skills. For proof, just turn to our article on page 48, which explains how computer science homework clubs run by IT professionals from Morgan Stanley have brought the subject to life, massively improved exam results and inspired pupils in one of the country’s most deprived boroughs to consider a career in IT.
