IT devices consume more than
25% of commercial electricity
in the US
IT energy management
specialist Verdiem is entering
the print optimisation arena
with the launch of Print &
Power Analyzer.
The software identifies
local and networked printers;
measures print activity by
department, printer, location or
user; identifies opportunities
to reduce costs; and shows the
electricity usage of PCs and
printers.
It ships with more than 30
reports offering insight into the
most economical and wasteful
departments, printers, users
and locations; which printers to
remove; and how much can be
saved by shifting volume from
high to low cost devices.
According to Verdiem,

Small professional services
firms are continuing to waste
money on poor printing
habits, according to a new
survey by Epson.
The Coleman Parkes survey
of more than 500 European
firms found that the UK is the
worst offender in Europe when
it comes to wasteful printing
practices, such as printing
documents and not reading
them or failing to collect print-
Cortado, a provider of cloud
desktop services, has
extended its ThinPrint ‘Print-
to-ePaper’ printer driver to
iOS devices, enabling users
to transfers documents from
a PC to an iPhone/iPad via
Cortado Workplace. The
capability already exists for
Android devices.
The paper-saving printer
driver enables someone with a
free Cortado Workplace account
to ‘print’ a computer-based
document as a PDF to their
Cortado Workplace account.
Thanks to an Auto Download
feature, the PDF is immediately
made available in a local ePaper
directory on the mobile device.
The PDF can be read on-screen
and, if necessary, printed.
“With Print-to-ePaper,
important documents, like travel
documents, are always at hand
and available for viewing offline,
even when on the road,” said
Charlotte Künzell, Cortado’s
CIO. “By utilising Cortado
A commission to produce the
interior décor for Café Eataliano
in Hamilton, Scotland gave print
service provider OPG a golden
opportunity to demonstrate
the environmental qualities
of its HP Designjet L26500
printers, notably their ability to
run water-based HP Latex Inks
containing no hazardous air
pollutants.
This, says OPG general
manager Alan Watson, makes
their output ideal for any location
where odour is a concern,
such as schools, hospitals and
restaurants.
“We finished installing the
entire graphics package for Café
Eataliano on a Friday and by
the Sunday, the restaurant was
full of customers. This could
not have been achieved with
our solvent printers, because
the smell would have still been
unbearable,” he said.
OPG used its three HP
Designjet L26500 printers to
print 40m2 of HP PVC-free Wall
Paper with giant images of
wine-making at restaurant owner
Manio Loia’s Tuscan vineyard. HP
PVC-free Wall Paper printed with
HP Latex Inks is GREENGUARD
Children & Schools Certified
and meets AgBB criteria for
health-related evaluation of VOC
emissions of indoor building
products.
The printers were also used
to print images onto textiles,
3M self-adhesive film for
backlit panels and a block-out
membrane for the roller blinds.
Manio Loia said: “The results
are stunning and look totally
different to any other restaurant;
not my words but those of
our customers! We’ve been
fully-booked since opening our
doors, and our customers always
remark on the graphics, scoring
them highly in the feedback
forms we provide.”

Based on its findings, Epson
estimates that UK professional
services businesses, half of
which print more than 150
pages a week, could collectively
save more than £45 million per
year by monitoring consumable
costs, introducing energy-
saving policies for printers and
printing double-sided.
The survey shows that:
n
56% of European
professional services firms
don’t print on both sides of
the page;
n
83% fail to monitor the
cost of print consumables
(including ink, toner and
paper);
n
Only 19% have an energy
saving policy for printers; and
n
75% don’t aim to purchase
products with a low carbon
footprint.
