How would you describe the
DR-C240?
It’s a compact, solidly built A4
duplex scanner supplied with
a range of software tools to
boost productivity and improve
business workflows.
Typically, where will you find it?
The scanner is designed for
decentralised scanning in customer-
facing and back-office environments.
It is quiet and compact enough to
fit on the edge of a desk, including
reception desks. In operation, it will
need an additional 12 inches of clear
space in front to accommodate the
fold-down paper tray.
Who has it been developed for?
It will suit any public or private sector
organisation that has a regular need
to scan paper documents including
those brought in by customers. Banks,
hotels, hospitals and Government
offices are a particular target.
What makes the DR-C240 so
suitable for those types of
organisation?
It has versatile paper handling
including the ability to scan
documents as light as 27gsm,
as long as 3 metres and as
thick as 4mm. This makes
it ideal for scanning ID
documents needed for
account openings, loan and
mortgage applications,
hospital admissions
etc.. A carrier sheet
supplied with the
scanner means
that it can
even scan UK
passports.
What if you need to scan
something thicker than 4mm, like
a magazine or a book?
To do that, you would have to acquire
the optional A4 or A3 flatbed unit. Or
walk to the nearest MFP.

SCANNERS
Brother expands range
Brother is capitalising on strong scanner sales growth with the
launch of its first range of departmental devices.
In 2014, sales of the company’s personal and small workgroup
scanners grew by 34%, more than twice as much as the overall
market, according to Infosource.
Designed for organisations scanning up to 6,000 pages a day, the
PDS-5000 and PDS-6000 are Kofax VRS compatible, making them
suitable for archiving applications in the healthcare, government
and finance sectors. Other useful features include the ability to scan
different media types without pre-sorting or stopping and starting.
Direct connection for FileDirector
Epson has partnered with independent software provider
Spielberg to deliver the latest in document management
solutions to customers of all sizes.
The partnership will enable customers to connect Epson
WorkForce document scanners and Epson WorkForce Pro multi-
function devices directly to Spielberg’s FileDirector document
management software, which combines
document management and storage with
security features and document tracking.
Administrators can set policies to
control access to documents and monitor
the complete ‘lifecycle’ of a document
including when it was scanned and
by whom, who subsequently opened
and viewed it, and whether necessary
approvals were granted.
Kodak i2000 Series enhanced
Kodak Alaris is releasing an enhanced series of A4 desktop
scanners that build on its award-winning i2000 Series

and databases; larger, 100-page input trays; and faster scan

accurate OCR;

imperfections to minimise the need for rescanning;

Smart Touch technology, which allows specific multi-step
processes to be programmed so that staff can create PDFs,
attach documents to email, organise them in folders or send
them to Cloud services at the touch of a button; and

upgraded to the full version by users with more complex batch
scanning requirements.
Prices range from £650 for the i2420 to £1,230 for the i2820.
All models come with a three-year warranty and are compatible
with Windows, LINUX and Apple Macintosh operating systems.
For exceptional, bound or fragile documents, optional A4 and A3
flatbed accessories are available.
Does Canon’s focus on customer-
facing environments mean the
DR-C240 is only suitable for low
volume applications and occasional
scanning?
No, not at all. Despite its compact
size, the DR-C240 has scan speeds
of 45 pages per minute, or 90 images
per minute when scanning two-
sided documents, and can handle a
workload of up to 4,000 scans per
day. A 60-sheet Automatic Document
Feeder (ADF) enables efficient batch
scanning, especially when used with
Canon CapturePerfect software.
What’s Canon CapturePerfect?
Software supplied with the scanner. Its
advanced processing features include
automatic batch separation and zonal
optical character recognition. The DR-
C240 also comes with Kofax VRS for
enhanced image quality; eCopy PDF
Pro PDF creation and editing software;
and Canon CaptureOnTouch 3, which
