Vendors often condense phrases into strings of capital letters designed to sound sharper, more modern, or more innovative than the underlying ideas. In isolation, this might seem harmless. However, in practice, it can derail meetings, confuse strategies and leave even the most seasoned professionals asking: “What does this one mean again?” After more than a decade working in Detection and Response, it’s clear to me that the market is now a maze of overlapping terminology. And the same acronym can mean different things depending on the vendor, the analyst, or even the team using it. Although while the industry is generating new labels at a rapid pace, the fundamentals of my world of Detection and Response are consistent. This is the paradox at the heart of today’s security landscape. The language may keep shifting but the underlying work does not. The shared goal beneath the acronyms Despite the proliferation of terms, every Detection and Response system is built around the objective to identify threats quickly and respond effectively.
