Google adds security to office suite

Google has added a series of email security products to the Google Apps suite, its online alternative to Microsoft Office.

Based on technology developed by Postini, which Google acquired last year, the new services cost from $3 per user, per year and work with any mail system, including Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange and Novell Groupwise.

The new services are Google Message Filtering, which filters incoming spam and malware; Google Message Security, which adds enhanced virus detection, outbound processing and content policy management; and Google Message Discovery, offering all of the above plus one year’s message archiving and retrieval.

Google Apps is used by more than 500,000 businesses and thousands of universities.

As email is now the primary means of business communication, the requirement to archive messages for future search and retrieval grows ever stronger. The challenge facing businesses is how to do this cost-effectively without overburdening corporate storage systems. Barracuda Networks believes it has the answer in the shape of the Barracuda Message Archiving Appliance, an integrated hardware and software appliance that indexes and preserves all email for rapid retrieval. The Barracuda Message Archiver is available in three models, with prices starting at £3,349.
