businessinfomag.uk magazine without paying a ransom, with the proportion able to do so doubling from 14% in 2023 to 30% in 2024. Alongside enhanced data recovery capabilities is growing recognition that paying a ransom is no guarantee that data will be recovered. In 2024, 32% of EMEA organisations that paid ransoms were able to recover their data, compared to 54% in 2023. Tim Pfaelzer, Senior Vice President and General Manager EMEA at Veeam, warns that these trends don’t mean the threat from ransomware is over. He said: “Attackers will always adapt. We are seeing some forgo ransomware encryption entirely, instead stealing data to extort money directly or sell it on black markets. For some, financial gain isn’t even the main driver; disruption is. Payments may drop, but it doesn’t mean attacks will. And our data has clearly shown that significant gaps remain in data resilience, leaving organisations vulnerable.” For example, last year only 37% of EMEA organisations had arrangements for alternative infrastructure, meaning that in the event of a site-wide attack 63% of organisations would be unable to recover until the main site was declared clean, which could take weeks. www.veeam.com … Developers optimistic about UK datacentre ambitions despite power concerns Are the UK’s AI data centre investment plans completely unrealistic? Quite possibly, warns specialist grid consultancy Roadnight Taylor. Its Powering Great Britain’s Data Centre Ambitions report highlights a disconnect between the projections of data centre developers and on-the-ground 3. Invest in early detection: implement penetration testing and monitoring to spot breaches sooner. 4. Formalise clear communication plans: provide clarity to employees, customers and partners in the event of disruption or a breach. 5. Ensure continuity, even if systems go down: use backups and manual workarounds as a Plan B. They may feel oldfashioned, but they could save your business in a crisis. www.workflo-solutions.co.uk … Paying a ransom is so 2023 The number of ransomware victims in EMEA choosing to pay a ransom to get their data back is in decline due to improvements in data resilience and changing attitudes towards negotiating with attackers. A comparison of Veeam’s retrospective 2024 and 2025 Ransomware Trends Reports shows that organisations are increasingly recovering data Don’t catch a cold this autumn October marks the start of the winter flu season, which West Lothian-based MSP Workflo Solutions warns can leave organisations under-staffed and more vulnerable to ransomware and phishing attacks. Managing Director Michael Field said: “Every year we see an increase in attacks from October onwards, so this month we’re urging everyone to take proactive steps to stay safe online.” For individuals, these include creating strong passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, keeping software updated and double-checking before downloading attachments or clicking links within emails. For businesses, Field recommends five steps: 1. Audit your data: understand what you hold and how it flows through your systems. 2. Evaluate supplier risks: ask if your partners’ systems are as secure as your own. BULLETIN 04 Voice clones now indistinguishable from the real thing Anyone who thinks they can distinguish an AI-generated voice from a human one needs to think again. A recent study by Queen Mary University of London (Voice clones sound realistic but not (yet) hyperrealistic, published in PLOS One) found that voice cloning technology has advanced to such an extent that the average listener is unable to recognise when they are listening to a deepfake voice. Participants in the study found AI‑generated voices to be more dominant than human voices and, in some cases, more trustworthy as well, with serious implications for ethics, copyright and security and the risk of misinformation, fraud and impersonation. Dr Nadine Lavan, Senior Lecturer in Psychology, who co-led the study, said: “We’ve all spoken to Alexa or Siri or had our calls taken by automated customer service systems. Those things don’t quite sound like real human voices, but it was only a matter of time until AI technology began to produce naturalistic, humansounding speech. Our study shows that this time has come.” She points out that it is not just the quality of clones that is concerning but the ease and speed with which her team was able to create clones of real voices using commercially available software. “The process required minimal expertise, only a few minutes of voice recordings, and almost no money,” she said. “It just shows how accessible and sophisticated AI voice technology has become.” The study compared real voices with two types of voice generated using AI voice synthesis tools – those ‘cloned’ from voice recordings of real humans and intended to mimic them and those generated from a large voice model with no specific human counterpart. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/ article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0332692 Michael Field

01732 759725 magazine an additional 100 pods across major UK transport hubs and conference centres over the next 12 months. www.swurf.co … Rio Ferdinand to judge CoCreate pitches Rio Ferdinand OBE and entrepreneur Sara Davies MBE have been announced as judges of Alibaba.com’s CoCreate Pitch competition, taking place during the B2B e-commerce giant’s inaugural sourcing and e-commerce event CoCreate Europe in London on November 14. The competition will see 30 finalists pitch their product ideas live, with $400,000 worth of prizes up for grabs. This includes $200,000 for the winner and up to $20,000 worth of prizes for each of the 10 runners-up. The judging panel will consist of representatives from the UK, Germany, France and the US, including Everette Taylor, CEO of Kickstarter, the official Crowdfunding Partner of CoCreate Pitch 2025. CoCreate 2025 is an opportunity for entrepreneurs, manufacturers and investors to come together to network and learn about Alibaba.com’s b2b e-commerce platform featuring 200 million product listings, 200,000+ verified suppliers, Trade Assurance options and AI-powered tools for automating the whole sourcing process. https://www.alibabacocreate.com/ of on-demand private meeting pods bookable in 30-minute slots. The one-metre-square soundproofed pods operated by SWURF feature private Wifi networks with security-grade encryption, smart LED lighting, air filtration and ergonomic seating. SWURF, founded in 2020 by Nikki Gibson, has pods in over 450 cafés, hotels and coworking hubs and a user-base of 12,000 SWURFERS contributing £1.85 million in revenue to hospitality partners, including Hilton, IHG, Kew Green Hotels and now Edinburgh Airport and Yotel. Following a six-figure investment from private investors (including long-term investor Gareth Williams, co‑founder of Skyscanner), the Scottish Government Techscaler programme and Scottish Enterprise, SWURF plans to deploy realities, with half of industry professionals expecting to be connected to the power grid within one or two years despite the more usual time of three to eight years. This optimism is all the more striking because many of the 50 data centre developers, investors and operators surveyed for the report already have first-hand experience of the difficulties involved in getting connected. These include energy cost and pricing uncertainty (cited by 36%), technical issues during the connection process (32%) and the need for infrastructure upgrades (26%). Roadnight Taylor CEO Hugh Taylor said: “Data centre developers are facing mounting grid connection challenges that can derail even the most promising projects. Those navigating their first large-scale developments often discover too late that grid capacity takes far longer than anticipated, and sometimes years longer than planned.” He added: “The interplay between technical, regulatory and commercial complexities in grid connections creates challenges that most developers underestimate until they’re deep into the process. We’ve seen significant growth in enquiries from clients grappling with these realities, with investors managing stranded capital and development teams wrestling with misaligned timelines and fragmented permitting processes.” Roadknight Taylor claims that half of all projects change location due to cost and connectivity restrictions (with 76% of survey respondents exploring more economically favourable regions, such as Africa and Asia). Even so, 64% of those surveyed believe Britain is on track to become a data centre powerhouse. https://roadknighttaylor.co.uk … At your bleisure Edinburgh Airport and Yotel Edinburgh are addressing the rise of travelling for ‘bleisure’ – where business trips are extended for leisure – and the ‘meetings in motion’ trend with the installation BULLETIN 05 Deepfakes are number one cyber risk Almost three quarters (71%) of UK organisations have experienced a cyberattack in the last twelve months, according to Databarracks’ 2025 Data Health Check – the highest figure recorded since the survey began 18 years ago. One in eight UK businesses (12%) and one in five large organisations (18%) have experienced AI-driven attacks, including deepfakes – synthetic AIgenerated audio, video or imagery powering a new wave of impersonation attacks. Chris Butler, Resilience Director at Databarracks, said: “When we’re working with organisations to run cyber exercises, deepfakes are now front of mind. They’re an emerging threat that most organisations still don’t feel equipped to handle. Exercises are often the first time teams seriously consider how they’d respond – and that’s where the gaps start to show.” The 500 UK decisionmakers surveyed for the report ranked AI-driven attacks, including deepfakes, as the #1 cyber risk and the #1 resilience challenge for the next five years. https://datahealthcheck.databarracks.com/2025 continued...

businessinfomag.uk magazine 6 staying an average of 3.76 years longer than staff in organisations where inclusion is weaker. As ever, the report highlights a disconnect between the claims of leaders and the experience of employees. While 25% of leaders say DEI is fully embedded in their organisation and regularly reported on, only 15% of employees feel the same. Circa half (51%) of those surveyed feel their organisation places too much emphasis on ticking boxes and meeting regulations and not enough on fostering a genuine culture of inclusion. Only slightly fewer (45%) believe DEI initiatives focus too much on external image rather than internal change. https://www.onvero.org.uk/stateof-inclusion-report-2025/ … Booking conflicts Over one third (38%) of UK businesses are losing up to 24 hours of operational time each week due to their continued reliance on outdated workspace management systems ill-suited to today’s flexible, hybrid workforces. Over one quarter (28%) of businesses surveyed by Matrix Booking say that being unable to find space in the office when it’s needed is impacting productivity. This rises to 43% of workers in government and the public sector. More than four out of five businesses (84%) report daily problems with their current booking systems, including overcrowded spaces on peak days (30%), booking conflicts (27%) and a lack of visibility into available desks and meeting rooms (23%). Only 28% believe their current system fully meets their needs. Paul Scott, Chief Technology Officer at Matrix Booking, said: “Flexibility, consistency and inclusivity are no longer nice-tohaves, they’re non-negotiable. Unfortunately, many continue to rely on outdated one-size-fits-all systems that can’t keep up with evolving workforce expectations.” but the best offers now go to those who can drive performance through insight and innovation.” He added: “For employers, this shift means rethinking talent strategy. Developing skills is now as vital as hiring them. Training, leadership mobility and technology literacy are the levers through which firms will attract and retain top performers.” roberthalf.com/gb/en … DEI maturity linked to staff retention and productivity Organisations that embed inclusion into their culture report higher productivity, lower turnover and greater employee happiness than organisations that have a less developed DEI position, claims Onvero, a provider of DEI training and consultancy services. Its inaugural DEI report, State of Inclusion in the UK: From Ambition to Action, reveals that employees in inclusive workplaces report higher productivity levels, with 68% rating productivity as excellent, compared to 27% in organisations where inclusion is weaker. In addition, organisations with mature DEI practices have lower staff turnover, with employees Skills training valued more highly than short-term pay rises The emergence of a talent market in which capability rather than experience is the key to career advancement is causing UK workers to rate skills development more highly than short-term pay rises, reveals new research by Robert Half. In a survey for the international recruitment firm’s latest Salary Guide, 69% of UK employees said they would swap a pay rise for structured learning, certification or digital upskilling. Matt Weston, Senior Managing Director UK & Ireland at Robert Half, said: “The market is now pricing in capability, not tenure. Professionals fluent in data analytics and business intelligence, AI, project leadership, financial strategy and compliance are at the top of employers’ wish lists – and salary bands. What distinguishes these skills is their transferable impact. They create clarity, speed and resilience – attributes every board values in uncertain conditions. Competitive pay still matters, BULLETIN …continued IT skills shortage impacting nine out of 10 mid-market firms More than nine out of 10 mid-market business leaders surveyed for Node4’s Unlocking Growth in the Mid-Market report complain that they are being impacted by the current IT skills shortage. Over half say that it is having a significant impact on their operations, with nearly one in three describing it as the most significant external influence on their organisation’s IT strategy. IT support and help desk roles are the hardest to hire and retain, according to Node 4’s research, followed by data scientists and analysts, then DevOps and software engineers. More than three-quarters of midmarket business leaders are taking steps to address IT skills shortages within their organisations, compared to 20% who are doing nothing. The most popular measures include hiring external consultants or contractors (44%), investing in upskilling and training (43%), increasing use of AI and automation (41%) and expanding partnerships with MSPs (39%). Almost one third (29%) say they are prioritising a reduction in IT headcount or implementing hiring freezes in response to economic pressures. Node4 CEO Richard Moseley said: “Most mid-market organisations intend to hire contractors or consultants to address IT skills shortages. We believe this is a short-term fix while they upskill employees or get to grips with using AI and automation.” He added: “It’s noteworthy that midmarket companies also intend to expand partnerships with MSPs. This will provide short-term support while organisations look to fill individual IT roles and plug skills gaps. However, even after a successful recruitment drive, we believe these trusted IT partners will continue to play a critical role in delivering out-of-hours services. This will include supporting newly recruited employees and relieving the challenges of operational availability.” www.node4.co.uk Richard Moseley

businessinfomag.uk magazine 12 Modern business communication increasingly revolves around flexibility, mobility, and integration. While many organisations aspire to an all‑in‑one unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) platform that combines voice, email, messaging, and video, achieving seamless integration is rarely straightforward. In practice, telephony, messaging, video and email often continue to operate independently, even if accessed from the same device, leaving businesses with fragmented systems that don’t fully work together. IP telephony presents a much more attractive and accessible COVER STORY regulatory challenges, especially around GDPR compliance. This all requires an enormous amount of effort and can take significant time to get right. Cost is another factor. Modern UC&C platforms often come with high upfront fees, ongoing licensing costs, and additional expenses for training and system adaptation. As a result, many organisations opt for a modular approach, keeping IP telephony separate from collaboration tools, which can offer a more immediate return on investment. IP telephony: reliable, scalable and cost-effective IP telephony, whether deployed on-premise or in the cloud, delivers a robust and cost-effective communication foundation. Studies show that businesses can achieve savings of up to 30-40% compared to traditional telephone systems. Beyond cost, IP solutions offer the scalability and reliability that modern workplaces demand, supporting remote working and multi-device connectivity. Unlike UC&C platforms, which aim to combine multiple functions into a single system, IP telephony focuses on delivering high-quality voice communication while integrating seamlessly with existing collaboration tools, such as the company CRM or ERP systems. Many specialised tools – from Microsoft Teams and Slack to Zoom and Google Workspace – already handle messaging and video efficiently. By combining IP telephony with these proven platforms, businesses can achieve a connected, flexible communication environment without unnecessary duplication or complexity. option. This still provides businesses with the reliability and flexibility that they are looking for from communications – but without the headache and significant investment of overhauling their existing communications system to integrate a UC&C platform. The UC&C challenge One major hurdle for UC&C adoption is complexity. Consolidating multiple communication channels into a single platform often requires businesses to rethink processes, retrain employees, and reconfigure IT infrastructure. Integrating voice, video and chat data also presents Why IP telephony is driving the future of business communication

01732 759725 magazine 13 COVER STORY headsets allow employees to move around the store freely without losing connectivity or audio clarity – even if the store spans multiple levels. A key enhancement that can be added to these DECT-based communication systems is beacon integration. These small Bluetooth‑based transmitters send regular signals to compatible devices. Within a healthcare setting, this means staff can pinpoint the location of vital equipment without wasting time – or in a retail store, it can help guide workers to where certain goods are located in the stock room. The practical approach For many businesses, UC&C remains a long-term ambition, while modular, IP-based systems form the practical backbone of today’s communication infrastructure. By focusing on reliable, high-quality voice solutions that integrate with existing collaboration tools, businesses can streamline communication, reduce costs, and future-proof their operations without waiting for complex UC&C implementations to succeed. and more stable connections compared to Wi-Fi or GSM. These devices are also built to withstand the drops and knocks of busy clinical work - with some even having antibacterial coatings that are resistant to bacteria. This DECT-over-IP technology is also valuable in retail stores, where background noise can make it difficult for colleagues to communicate with one another at checkouts or on the shop floor. DECT and Bluetooth-enabled Voice remains core Despite the rise of messaging and video, voice remains the most critical medium for businesses to communicate. Whether for clarity, immediacy, or personal connection, voice communication continues to underpin daily workflows. At Snom, the quality and versatility of our products show how IP telephony can be an alternative to UC&C platforms. businessinfomag.uk 14 magazine AUTHENTICATION Visitors to the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology’s stand at last month’s International Cyber Expo 2025 in Olympia may have noticed a UK-born, world-first authentication solution fit for today’s hyperconnected world. Developed by Peterboroughbased business Shayype Solutions Ltd, the patented ‘all-on-one-screen’ system provides computer, tablet and phone users with dynamic one-time codes as an alternative to passwords, two-step verification codes sent via SMS and multi-factor authentication. Importantly, users can log-in from any device, not just their own, and Shayype doesn’t require an additional device to work, typically a phone, although it can be used in a conventional 2FA set-up or as backup for biometric authentication systems should readers fail or be unavailable. How it works The key to how Shayype works lies in its name. When a user first registers with Shayype, they set up a secret, memorable pattern of 4 to 12 cells within a 35-cell grid which is never exposed in use (unlike phone pattern locks where users trace shapes on-screen). When a login/authorisation is required, users are presented with an on-screen grid in which each cell contains a number (each log-in generates a new set of numbers). The user finds their one-time passcode (OTP) by extracting the numbers displayed in each of the cells that make up their pattern. Secure and easy to use Shayype Solutions President and Founder Jonathan Craymer believes this ‘all-on-one-screen’ solution overcomes the problem of digital identity that continues to blight the digital and real worlds. “The tech giants have done a great job creating the online world but have completely dropped the ball when it comes to providing a secure, easy to use way for all of us to prove who we are that attackers can’t capture and then reuse, as they can with passwords, biometric information, personal data or devices,” he said. “It’s also ridiculous to assume our mobiles will always be to hand whenever we need to authenticate. As we all know, they get stolen, break, lose charge or won’t connect. That’s why an extra ingredient that works when all else fails is so vital.” Digital ID scheme As an example of where Shayype could be a big benefit, Craymer cites the Government’s planned digital ID scheme, pointing out how giving users ‘one-time’ codes on their phones with which to open a digital ID app would be more secure than passwords and cheaper than sending codes by text. “The only real ‘protection’ when turning on a phone is normally a PIN or a biometric, typically facial recognition. However, on some phones this can be ‘fooled’ by showing photos of the owner. Then, to securely open an app such as a digital ID card something like a password is required, but it’s common knowledge that fixed passwords have major security issues. What’s clearly needed is a ‘better password’ and here our Shayype one-time code system could be ideal.” A breakthrough in authentication Fellow Shayype Director John Bullard adds that at a time when the need for robust, user-friendly cybersecurity has never been greater, Shayype has the potential to become a world leader in authentication. He said: “Shayype represents a breakthrough in authentication technology, poised to fundamentally re-model the global cyber landscape, making digital spaces safer, more accessible and resilient for everyone. I believe this new ingredient technology, underpinned by our long-established bedrock of common law, could help make the UK a forerunner of much-needed digital trust, in the same way Greenwich became the centre for global navigation.” North West Cambridgeshire MP Sam Carling, whose constituency covers the part of Peterborough where Shayype is based, said: “Cybersecurity isn’t just a technical issue, it underpins trust in our economy and the safety of people’s everyday lives. When I first met Shayype, it was clear that they’re bringing forward exactly the kind of innovation we need to see more of: solutions built here in the UK that can make a real difference globally, and bring investment from around the world right here to benefit North West Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. I’m looking forward to continuing to support them to grow and contribute to both our local and national economies.” www.shayype.com Is Shayype the future of authentication?
