D865 D8C D815W D812 D862 With cybersecurity front of mind following recent data breaches at leading retailers, Blancco Technology Group is reminding businesses not to overlook less high-tech data security risks like the loss, the theft and the disposal of laptops and other devices, which remain common sources of data leaks. Its survey of 2,000 CISOs, CTOs and data compliance leads in large enterprises across Europe, North America and APAC reveals that in the last three years 86% of enterprises have experienced a data breach and 73% have experienced a data leak. The most common ways to lose data are through phishing‑related data breaches (cited by 54%), followed by improper network configuration (46%), stolen or lost devices/drives (41%), weak and stolen credentials (36%) and ransomware (32%). The careless reuse or disposal of used computing devices remains a significant risk, with 17% of respondents who have experienced a breach or leak citing the redeployment of devices or drives that still had sensitive data on them as the cause. Blancco CEO Lou DiFruscio said: “Improper data disposal is a hidden risk, and it’s not talked about enough. Every business IT leader needs to understand its responsibilities, seek out the best practices that maintain compliance with data privacy regulations and secure data at the finish line. Our State of Data Sanitization Report acknowledges what organisations are dealing with now and gives compliance, IT and ESG teams insight into how those issues affect their approach to end-oflife data and asset disposition.” The report shows that enterprises are working hard to improve compliance with data protection and privacy regulations, cybersecurity frameworks and data destruction best practice. More than half say they are boosting their investment in this area, with an average budget increase of 46%, and almost all already have (55%) or are rolling out/ drafting (42%) policies relating to data disposition. However, they are still making elementary mistakes. For example, 25% of laptops and desktops and 19% of data centre assets are refurbished without certified erasure, increasing the potential for data loss. At the other end of the scale, in their desire to avoid a data leak, enterprises are creating unnecessary e-waste by destroying perfectly good IT equipment that could be wiped clean of data and given a second life. As much as 47% of data centre assets are still functional when they are destroyed for data security reasons.
