Given that political uncertainty was a significant reason for low demand in the third quarter of 2019, contributing to ‘the weakest UK tech sector growth for nearly four years’ according to the KPMG UK Tech Monitor, it is to be hoped that the prospect of stable Government is the shot in the arm the IT sector needs. Stronger demand won’t just be welcomed by IT professionals. Many office workers, too, are desperate for new equipment, from laptops and tablets to support their growing mobility to interactive meeting systems to improve collaboration with colleagues, customers and suppliers. In a recent survey of workers in small and medium-sized businesses commissioned by Lenovo, 41% of respondents complained that they did not have the technology to support flexible working and 38% described IT-related issues, such as long loading times and slow file transfers, as a major distraction. Encouragingly, more than three quarters of employers surveyed consider it a priority to improve the employee experience at work, which includes giving them the technology they need to do their jobs properly. Doing so will benefit existing employees, make your business more attractive in the jobs market and enable you to provide a better service to customers. Our cover story on page 22 outlines the benefits that Clifton Coffee Roasters has enjoyed since overhauling its business processes and internal communications with Microsoft 365. WithWindows 7 End of support imminent, as John Richardson highlights on page 21, now is the perfect time for SMEs to analyse their existing IT systems and to assess their suitability for the future.
