Average connection speeds in the UK
went up by 27% last year to 13.9Mbps,
9th fastest in EMEA and 17th globally,
according to figures from the
Fourth
Quarter, 2015 State of the Internet Report
by Akamai, a provider of content delivery
network (CDN) services. Average peak
connection speeds in the UK rose 16%
year-on-year to 56.8Mbps.
Over 30% of mobile data is used by apps
running in the background, according
to research by Opera Max. Facebook
Messenger and Gmail are the most data-
hungry apps, with 73% of their total
data usage happening in the background.
More than a third (36%) of workers
surveyed by Regus complain that
colleagues leave meeting rooms filthy and
stacked with dirty cutlery and cups. Their
biggest worry is the effect this has on
their company’s reputation with clients
and potential customers.
UK workers believe that 36% of their
time at work is unproductive – more
than any other European country,
according to survey of 6,250 employees
in 14 countries by Qualtrics.
Only 39% of people trust social media
giant Facebook, compared to 69% who
say they trust Google.When online
privacy company vestvpn.com asked
consumers whether they had read a full
privacy policy from iTunes, Facebook or
Google, a whopping 83% admitted they
had not.
Nearly half (47%) of consumers in the
UK and Ireland find junk mail more
annoying than their commute to work,
claims global IT services company Ricoh.
Two-thirds (69%) say they feel less
loyalty to a brand that spams them with
irrelevant information.
Over half (57%) of UK businesses have a
formal cyber security strategy, according
to a report by the Institute of Directors
(IoD) and Barclays
(Cyber Security:
Underpinning the Digital Economy)
. Even
so, just 49% provide cyber awareness
training for staff and only 20% are
insured against an attack.
Despite the risk of exposing private
or sensitive information, 58%
of smartphone/tablet users stay
permanently signed-in to their email
accounts. The study by anti-malware and
mobile security company BullGuard also
reveals that less than half have a pass
code on their phone or tablet, meaning
anyone can access its contents freely.
Shared Parental Leave (SPL) came into
force a year ago but take-up has been
low, claims London law firm Bates Wells
Braithwaite (BWB). Its analysis shows
that 65% of employers have had no

requests for leave and 30% have had
just one or two. Only 21% of employers
feel there is a good understanding of SPL
across their organisation.
Confrontation-averse British consumers
prefer to make complaints online,
according to research by online review
platform Trustpilot. Two thirds (66%) said
they avoided confrontation wherever
possible, with 50% choosing to complain
online, compared to 16% who prefer to
make their point in person.
Two thirds (66%) of employees are now
saving through a workplace pension
scheme, up from the 45% in 2010. This
figure increases to 74% if those earning
less than £10,000, who are not eligible
for automatic enrolment, are excluded

More than three-quarters (77%) of
IT professionals have seen and kept
quiet about potentially embarrassing
information concerning colleagues.
The research by Unified Security
Management company AlienVault
highlights the high levels of trust and
responsibility placed on IT professionals
in the course of their working lives.
Since its launch in 2009, more than
100,000 projects have been successfully
funded on Kickstarter. It took 121 days
to reach a century of successfully funded
projects, compared to just 3 days for its
most recent 100.

Six out of 10 UK employees (61%) want more perks
from their employers, claims facilities and building
maintenance specialists Direct365. The most in-
demand incentives are flexible working (35%), a
company car (27%), gym membership (14%) and child
care vouchers (6%).
