Blu-ray
archiving made easy
Epson has added a Blu-ray model to its range
of disc publishers. Featuring archival-grade
Blu-ray disc drives and a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed
interface, the PP-100IIBD Discproducer can
burn and print at least eight Blu-ray discs in
an hour.
It can produce up to 100 50GB BD-R discs,
or more than four terabytes of data, in a single
batch, making it perfect for organisations that
need to digitise and archive high volumes of data.
Adrian Clark, head of sales for Business
Systems at Epson UK, said: “Epson has already
demonstrated its position as a market leader with
the accuracy and reliability of the Discproducer
series. This is why over 50% of hospitals in
Europe that install CD/DVD publishers for
archiving patient data are selecting Epson.”
* Ingram Micro has signed a UK distribution
agreement for Aleratec’s range of hard disk,
USB drive and optical disk duplicators, as well
as its mobile and tablet accessories.

LuraTech, has announced that PDF
Compressor, a production-level application for
compression, conversion to PDF and PDF/A,
OCR, classification and form data extraction,
supports the new PDF/A-3 standard.
An important feature of PDF/A-3 is its ability
to include any kind of document, including Excel
tables,Word documents, HTML or XML files, as an
embedded attachment to the PDF/A document.
Combining machine or human readable data with
a digital image in the same file makes it possible
to fulfil previously mutually exclusive needs: to
keep working with a ‘living’ document and to
archive it.
This capability is likely to be prove valuable
in areas such as automated invoice processing,
as it removes the need to scan incoming paper
invoices. A customer who receives a PDF/A-3
invoice containing an XML file via email will be
able to view the invoice in a PDF reader and
automatically import invoice data from the XML
file into their accounting software or ERP system.
Launched 10 years ago, LuraTech’s PDF
Compressor is a production-orientated solution
for reading documents, compressing them and
converting them to PDF or PDF/A. It is widely
used by private and public sector organisations,
including the NHS, for the digitisation and
archiving of documents in PDF/A format.

Smaller photos
New from I.R.I.S., IRISCompressor software
converts photos and other files into PDF/XPS
formats, reducing their size by a factor of five
without any compromise in quality. As well
as shrinking files sizes for easier sharing and
storage, the software creates fully searchable
PDFs that make it easier to find information
by searching for keywords. It costs £29.

Interior design start-up Couture Cases
is using
printable 3M graphic films to add interest
to covers for radiators, TVs, shelves and air
conditioning units.
Designer Paul Johnson said: “I had the idea
for Couture Cases when seeking an alternative to
traditional, plain radiator covers for a decorating
project. Applying an image or texture using
conventional materials or spray-painting is slow
and can impose high business risks, production
costs and selling prices.”
Instead, he wraps the covers in 3M film that
can be printed in a limitless range of colours and
images from professional artists or a customer’s
own photographs.
“We can work with customers anywhere in
the country, and produce designs quickly using

Get the fitness bug
Many businesses are using technology to improve the well-being of employees. In
Business
Info Issue 110,
we explained how Heia Heia had developed a web-
based social media platform – widely used by businesses – to enable
subscribers to support each other’s fitness efforts. Another company
with a large number of business customers, Fitbug, creates personalised
games to increase employee engagement in employee health and
wellness programmes.
Fitbug has just introduced the Fitbug Air Smart Activity Tracker and wellness
programme. The tracker records every step taken by a user and streams or
uploads the information to a website via a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone,
tablet or PC. Fitbug uses the data to create daily exercise and meal plans, with
text messages, emails updates and online records to keep
members motivated and on track.
The Fitbug Air plus 12 months’ access to
premium personalised health and wellness coaching
costs £49.99 or £24.99 up front plus £2.99 per
month.

3M’s network of authorised wrapping service
providers. Our first orders have included a cover
with a corporate logo, a set of covers including
photographed driftwood and complementary
single colours, and we are currently working
with a client to produce a cover using their own
image of a long held and cherished motor scooter.
Customers love the opportunity to personalise
their covers at a realistic price,” Johnson explained.
