Canon
has broadened its range of USB-
powered portable scanners with the
addition of the
imageFORMULA P-208
.
Even smaller than the imageFORMULA
P-215, it weighs 600g, yet still features
a 10-sheet ADF; 16ipm duplex scanning;
600dpi scan resolution; plastic/
embossed card scanning; and embedded
CaptureOnTouch Lite software for plug
and play simplicity. An optional Wi-Fi
unit (the CanonWU10) adds wireless
connectivity, which, in combination
with a free CaptureOnTouch Mobile
app, enables scanning directly to iOS
and Android devices. Another benefit
of theWU10 is that it provides an
alternative or backup power supply.
Canon has also launched a desktop
scanner with integratedWiFi for
scanning to smartphones/tablets (the
imageFORMULA DR-C125W).

Following in the footsteps of LG
(amongst others),
I.R.I.S.
is introducing
a mouse-scanner that lets users capture
paper-based information by swiping
the mouse across the page. Text and
images appear instantaneously on
the computer screen, from where
they can be dragged and dropped
into Microsoft Office for editing;
emailed with a single click; or
uploaded to social networks
and cloud storage. The
IRIScan
Mouse
can scan photos and text
up to A3 size in 300dpi. It costs £79.

Pen scanners or digital highlighters are an
interesting option for capturing specific
areas of a document, book or article. The
C-PEN TS1
from C Technologies combines
digital capture with text-to-speech
conversion. You can use it to capture and
transfer printed text to digital devices and
programs: if desired, scanned text can be
spoken aloud. Additional software can be
used to translate foreign text or look up
highlighted words and phrases. The corded
TS1 is designed for use with a desktop
PC. The Bluetooth-enabled, battery-
powered C-PEN 3.5 is a better option for
mobile use.

If all you want to do is scan and manage
business cards, a specialist device like
the
IRISCard Anywhere 5
(£129) could
be just what you need. Designed for one
purpose only, the scanner comes with
Cardiris Pro 5 software that instantly
captures contact information and extracts
key details for export to a contact
management system. The scanner can be
used as a stationary device in the office
or taken on the road. When used as a
battery-powered mobile device, images
are saved on the built-in memory, SD card
or removable USB key. A corporate
version, IRISCard Corporate 5 (£499),
includes connectors to Salesforce,
Google Contact, Microsoft Dynamics
CRM (both on and off-line), Outlook,
ACT!, and comes with a 5-user license.

network connectivity so that multiple
users can scan to digital archives,
Microsoft Sharepoint and cloud-based
systems such as Dropbox, Evernote and
Google Docs. The ability to scan to the
cloud allows employees to view scanned
documents from any web-enabled
desktop or mobile device. The ADS-

scanner features a 9.3cm touchscreen
and USB port for removable storage. It
costs £479 (ex VAT).

The
IRIScan Pro 3 Cloud
offers
something a little different in the
shape of a detachable base that can be
separated from the main scanning unit.
This arrangement gives users a 50-sheet
automatic document feeder when
scanning in the office and a smaller,
slimmed down unit to take on the road.
Like most modern scanners, the 15 pages
per minute IRIScan pro 3 Cloud (£299)
lets you scan documents straight to
SharePoint and cloud storage providers.
It comes with Readiris Corporate 14
OCR software for converting PDFs into
editable text; IRISFile 12 filing software;
and Cardiris business card software.

Heavily promoted online, the
Doxie One
(£119) from
Apparent
is an entry-level
paper scanner for iPads, PCs and Macs.
With SD card removable storage as
standard, it can be used on its own and
later synced with a computer or iPad
(using an optional Lightning or 30-pin
SD card reader accessory). The need for
mains power limits its effectiveness as a
mobile device. A better option for mobile
workers is the battery-powered Doxie
Go, which can store scans in its built-in
memory, on USB flash drives and on SD
cards. An optional Eye-Fi wireless SD card
adds the option of wireless connectivity
to a computer, iPad, iPhone and Android
device. You can also connect the Doxie
Go to a computer by USB and recharge
its battery in the process.

The
Xerox Travel Scanner 150
is a bona fide portable scanner. It
is powered by USB and, at 0.34kg,
weighs less than a can of cola. It captures
documents as searchable PDFs for
storage on a computer or in the cloud.
