The DSE Partnership has produced the following Top Ten Tips to avoid back pain in front of a computer or screen:

1. Lean back against the support of your chair to prevent slouching

2. Make sure the top of your screen is at eye level

3. Push your chair right under the desk so that your stomach is almost touching the front of the desk

4. Keep your mouse close to you to avoid over-reaching

5. Clear any obstructions from under the desk so you can swivel on your chair without hitting your knees 6. Keep your desk tidy to help prevent over-reaching for your mouse, phone etc.

7. Take regular breaks: a short break every 30 minutes is better than a longer break taken less frequently 8. Place the printer away from your desk to encourage getting up from your chair 9. Have a SMALL glass of drinking water on your desk which requires regular flling to encourage you to take frequent breaks from your PC 10. Reduce repetition when clicking your mouse by changing settings to highlight and click instead of double clicking.

The DSE Partnership offers a range of simple online assessments to reduce the risks of injury and meet the legal responsibilities of employers. Taking less than 25 minutes, the online assessments help optimise computer workstation set-up to avoid neck, shoulder, back or arm pain, fatigue and eyestrain. A management system hosted in-house or off-site provides in-depth analysis including a full compliance audit trail along with identifcation and prioritisation of DSE problems. The system also supports training and risk assessment, as well as higher levels of compliance with automated email follow up procedures for users and administrators.
