Lawyers trial wireless digital dictation

Coles Miller, one of Dorset’s leading law frms, has always responded quickly and proactively to changes in the marketplace and to the opportunities provided by new offce technology.

The frm has 13 partners and around 110 staff based at offces in Poole, Bournemouth,

Broadstone and Charminster. Charting its heritage back to the late 1920s, Coles Miller provides a personal, effcient and cost-effective legal service for both private individuals and business clients.

Coles Miller has grown substantially over the last 25 years and now has one of the largest dedicated commercial departments in the area. Partner Neil Andrews was instrumental in the move from an analogue tape-based dictation system to Philips SpeechMikes and the BigHand digital workfow solution back in 2003. Recently, having read about the latest wireless Philips SpeechMike Air in a specialist magazine, Coles Miller’s IT manager arranged for a trial of the new device which proved highly successful.

Increasing effciency

Based on extensive research and product development, the SpeechMike Air incorporates perfect ergonomics in a futuristic design. A dictation microphone, playback speaker, dictation control and PC navigation are combined in a single user-friendly device.

Having noted immediate benefts for Coles Miller on the introduction of digital dictation – including faster document turnaround and effcient work sharing between offces – Neil Andrews found that using a wireless Philips device brought further advantages. He commented:

The SpeechMike Air range also includes the Airpor t docking station, for data transfer to a PC and speedy recharging, and the Airbridge receiver module.This handles speech data from the dictation device, wirelessly via Bluetooth technology from a range of up to 10 metres. Data transfer is encrypted for complete security, ensuring client confdentiality.

The verdict on wireless digital dictation

According to Neil Andrews, both fee-earners and secretaries at Coles Miller immediately saw the benefts of digital workfow:
