Bringing 70 staff employed in the North-East under one roof is expected to improve collaboration and communication between different departments, including the region’s finance, sales, IT and telecoms support, engineering, human resources, account management and business development teams. Warren Colby, who heads up the Team Valley plant, said: “The new office provides a more collaborative and cleaner space for those who didn’t have enough room before. It’s a step towards fostering a more united, efficient and cohesive workforce.” The 20,000 sq. foot state-of-the-art workspace should also reduce the company’s environmental impact, with optimised heating, ventilation, and lighting systems and just one set of overheads instead of two. Alongside this move, Agilico has additional capacity for an expanded its refurbished centre at the Team Valley site, enabling it to become an IT refurbishing hub for the local area and neighbouring regions across the north of England. www.agilico.co.uk Mark Bjornsgaard FarrPoint trio inspiring Orkney students Three members of the Edinburgh office of independent connectivity and smart technology consultancy FarrPoint recently travelled to Orkney to take part in the Orkney International Science Festival (September 7-13). The trip was undertaken in partnership with Highlands and Islands Enterprise to inspire young people to consider a career in telecoms at a time when 60% of telecoms engineers are over 50 and 42% of telecoms businesses report a skills gap in the labour market. As part of the Festival’s Family Day, FarrPoint Telecoms Consultant Alan Patterson, GIS Consultant Nikki Robertson and Head of Marketing Kristina Vard (shown in photo) visited Kirkwall Grammar School to deliver two ‘Connectivity and the Internet of Things’ workshops. Alan Patterson said: “Everyone’s talking about careers in STEM, but you don’t hear much about working in telecoms, so it may not be the first career choice that comes to mind! However, it’s a sector that has seen huge developments recently and is fastpaced and exciting. A job in telecoms could be anything from a satellite engineer who plans and design telecoms infrastructure in space, to a design engineer running the television and internet coverage for major sporting events or a telecom leader planning how high streets and shopping centres function.” www.farrpoint.com Deep Green and Civo form exclusive partnership Deep Green, a carbon-neutral compute pioneer, has appointed pure-play cloud native services provider Civo as its exclusive cloud partner, giving Civo customers the opportunity to run their cloud workloads on Deep Green’s servers. By immersing its small-edge data centres, or ‘digital boilers’, in mineral oil, Deep Green is able to capture 90% of the heat produced by servers. This is passed through a heat exchanger to heat water for organisations that require significant amounts of heat, such as swimming pools, food manufacturers and textile firms. With this partnership, Civo customers benefit from a groundbreaking sustainable cloud solution that can help them move to a net-zero future, and Deep Green benefits from a constant workload to generate zero carbon heat to power its community-based projects. Mark Bjornsgaard, Founder of Deep Green, said: “Energy is expensive, and precious. So many organisations and communities struggle to afford the heat they need to exist. Yet so much energy, so much heat, is wasted every day by data centres. That’s what Deep Green is fixing and in the process dramatically reducing overall carbon emissions. We’re excited to have Civo’s customers join us on the journey. For too long, compute infrastructure has contributed to the problem of climate change. Now it can be part of the solution.” www.deepgreen.energy
