Dell is continuing to build up its solutions portfolio as it moves
towards offering full-scale, pan-European managed print services
for SMEs.
Following the introduction of Dell Print Page Service and Dell
Toner Monitoring, which are designed to help small and medium-
sized businesses reduce the cost and complexity of consumables
management, Dell is now offering customers Papercut print
management software.
Dave McNally, product marketing director of Dell Imaging, EMEA,
said: “The services portfolio for UK customers purchasing directly
from Dell is designed to enable more efficient print environments
to boost savings and staff productivity. These services are building
blocks in the creation of full managed print services for SMBs.”
Dell Print Page Service is a pay-per-print offering that enables
customers to spread the cost of supplies, support and maintenance
over periods of up to five years with fixed monthly payments for easy
budgeting.
Dell Toner Monitoring Service is an automated toner monitoring
and replenishment service that relieves customers of the burden
of consumables management and storage. Dell consumables
are supplied at a discounted rate and
customers only pay for what they use.
The new solution, Papercut
print management software, gives
organisations complete control over
and visibility of printed output so
that they can reduce print costs,
eliminate waste and improve
security. Key features include in-
depth print reporting, rules-based
printing and pull printing.
Cortado has announced a
new version of its ThinPrint
virtual printing solution, which
extends the benefits of virtual
printing to all enterprise
network infrastructures.
In addition to Citrix,
VMware and Microsoft
Remote Desktop Services
environments, ThinPrint Engine
10 brings compression and
standardised printing to users
of physical desktops with local
applications, including PCs,
Macs and laptops.
ThinPrint uses a virtual
driver, the ThinPrint Output
Gateway, which keeps desktops
free of printer drivers and
provides users with a uniform
GUI for all printers, regardless
of manufacturer, including
popular add-on features, such
as hole-punching or binding.
The simplicity of this
approach saves users money
by reducing the burden on
helpdesks and increases user
productivity. Further savings
come from applying black
& white and duplex printing
centrally and from print job
tracking and comprehensive
reporting that give
administrators the information
needed to optimise the printing
infrastructure.
Version 10 boasts a number
of enhancements that reduce
the amount of bandwidth
used when printing. This
improves the performance of
WiFi networks and enables
businesses to handle print jobs
via central print servers rather
than directly at branch offices.
Enhancements include:
n
Improved font management.
No longer are entire fonts,
often with 22-25 MB of data,
transferred. Instead, only the
individual characters needed
for each specific print job are
transmitted;
n
ThinShare technology.
This compresses print jobs
transmitted via Wi-Fi to the print
server, reducing print data by up
to 98%. As a result, more users
can work simultaneously in the
network without encountering
the issues associated with
limited bandwidth, such as slow
performance and instability; and
n
A new, simple licensing
model that offers completely
user-based licensing.
Thorsten Hesse, Cortado
product manager for ThinPrint,
said: “ThinPrint Engine 10
is a real milestone. As the
leading solution in the field
of virtual printing, we are
pleased that our 15 years of
experience now benefit users
of physical desktops, including
those working with laptops in
Wi-Fi networks. Introducing
standardised printing with
its immense cost-saving
potential, without turning the
IT environment on its head or
installing software on individual
machines, is particularly
beneficial.”

MPS powers Balreed growth
Growing demand for managed print services and production
print helped Balreed achieve turnover of almost £30 million in
2013, up 23% on the year before.
Balreed group marketing director Gary Downey said: “Balreed’s
reputation as the most pro-active provider of managed print
services has been key to our growth in clients, unit placements
and turnover. We made two acquisitions in 2013, which are now
fully integrated into the business, but these were in the latter half
of the year so have had very little impact on the results and we will
see the benefits of those next year.”

Scratch-free stapling
Ricoh’s new A3 colour MFPs can bind up to five pages
without a staple. The stapleless stapler saves on resources
and avoids the risk of scratches to the glass platen when
scanning a document.
The MP C2003SP and C2503SP have print speeds of up to 25
pages per minute; support SRA3 oversize A3; and incorporate a
productive GWNX controller that powers features such as remote
fax, print from USB/SD, quota setting, a customisable home page
and an information screen. An optional touch panel provides
Android/iPhone-like ease of use.
Robert Brown, product manager at Ricoh UK and Ireland, said:
“Our new A3 colour MFPs allow users to save time and increase
their workflow through innovative features such as a built-in
finisher, stapleless stapler, smart card reader, ID Card Copy and
Searchable PDF.”
