Only those cartridges and components that are no longer fit for reuse or remanufacturing go into recycling. Gillian Nuttall: We provide our customers with tools that help them monitor and manage their environmental footprint, as well as supporting them with practical advice. Our Eco Calculator is a web-based tool that enables organisations to measure the carbon footprint and paper consumption of their print devices. Our ‘Switch on Power Save – Rethink the Way You Print’ is also a great resource that provides practical advice on how customers can get the most from their Konica Minolta bizhub devices, while at the same time reducing energy consumption and focusing on the most efficient way to print. We are always looking for innovative ways to work with our partners to deliver more sustainable solutions and to further reduce our collective impact. Nancy Powell: We’ve built deep experience in this space over several decades. Our HP Planet Partners programme, dating back to 1982, is one of the most established global schemes for recycling consumables, and now is available in 66 countries. In fact, we recycled over one billion cartridges last year alone. To support our partners, we provide sustainability-focused tools that enable them to incorporate environmental impact assessments into customer discussions in a clear and actionable way. These tools empower customers to make sustainability part of their procurement and planning processes. We are able to provide environmental impact information upon request, but this is increasingly available through automated tools that show carbon data right down to the invoice level. We also offer certified carbon neutral print solutions that span the entire lifecycle. This includes offsetting emissions from the printer itself, as well as from the paper used, through our global partnership with WWF. Rowan Jeffreys-Hoar: Our Sustainability Optimisation Programme provides a structured approach to analysing print PrintIT Reseller: How do you enable channel partners to deliver sustainable MPS – for example, providing tools that enable customers to assess the true environmental footprint of their print infrastructure or recycling programmes for both consumables and hardware? Arjan Paulussen: We have a dedicated MPS offering for the channel in place, Lexmark MPS Express. This programme includes a package of services that meet the requirements for smart printing solutions for small to medium-sized companies through a partner – based on turnkey, cloud-based solutions. Lexmark Cloud Print Management (CPM) offers energy savings by eliminating dedicated location-based print servers and utilising shared computing power in the cloud. Lexmark CPM can also reduce the number of printed pages by up to 30%, thereby reducing the environmental impact, energy consumption, and maintenance activities. We have been integrating AI and IoT into our managed print services successfully for many years. The AI used provides predictive technical support. Thanks to Lexmark Cloud Fleet Management and IoT-based predictive services as part of MPS, partners and enterprises have access to detailed analysis. 70% of potential print interruptions can thus be predicted and prevented via remote intervention before they even occur. This significantly reduces the number of on-site technician visits and saves costs and fuel, minimising the impact on the environment. Via our Collected by Lexmark website, we offer customers eco reports on their printer fleets. As already mentioned, thanks to our sophisticated return programs for toner cartridges and printing devices, LCCP and LECP, we – together with our partners and customers – achieve return rates of 50% in Germany and the USA (LCCP). The global industry average here is 20-30%. Additionally, our cartridges can be remanufactured up to ten times. In the industry, the common practice seems to be only two or three times. LCCP is available in over 60 countries, representing 90% of Lexmark’s global market. It enables customers to return used cartridges, which are then taken Louise Marshall: We’re constantly investigating new ways to design sustainability into our products and our long history in R&D investment is awardwinning, most recently in areas such as sustainable packaging. In 2024, Brother Industries won the Japan Packaging Institute’s Technical Packaging award for our work to design and produce lightweight pulp moulded packaging, a potential alternative to industry standard polystyrene, which is often bulky and difficult to recycle. …continued 44 Nancy Powell
