One of the biggest impacts of the pandemic has been a huge amount of interest in migrating legacy infrastructure to the cloud. Customers are looking to reduce costs, and eliminating print servers, adopting solutions for e-signatures etc. are a really solid way to achieve this. Where do you see the next big opportunity? One of the biggest challenges facing companies today is how to integrate multiple software solutions – such as capture workflow, e-forms, e-signature, and content management. Our ability to offer customers a single platform that’s managed in the cloud to do all of these things seamlessly, cost-effectively and efficiently, is where see the next big opportunity. What would make your day job easier? Empowering others to make informed decisions independently. Vasion has a fantastic entrepreneurial attitude and our people are encouraged to do what they do best without having to ask permission every time. What’s the best bit of business advice you’ve been given? I actually have two. The first is an old saying ‘where there is no vision, people perish’. That can be applied to all walks of life but in business it’s imperative there is a vision and that it’s understood by everyone so they, and in turn the business, can thrive. The second piece of advice comes from a book by Harvard professor Clayton Christensen called ‘How will you measure your life?’ Essentially, he advocates for a healthy work-life balance and argues that just as you focus on strategy and objectives in business, you should apply the same focus and energy in investing in family and other relationships. Life has to be a balance and you shouldn’t sacrifice long-term happiness for short-term success. If you had had a crystal ball, would you have done anything differently? I don’t think I would. I’ve been lucky to remain in an industry I enjoy and I’ve had a good career and lots of fun to date. The one thing I have always done is to put people first, if you do that the products will sell and the profits will come. Describe your most embarrassing moment. Way back in the early 2000s I was trying to set up a new MPS deal at the BBC. I’d installed some software to track print usage etc. it was a bit flaky at the time, but I thought no more about it. Until I got a call at 10pm one evening from a very irate Irish man telling me they couldn’t print off the scripts for the 10 o’clock news. I had single-handledly broken the BBC news room! https://www.vasion.com What was your first job? Selling jeans in a jeans shop. I was the most competitive Saturday boy there! What would be your dream job? Working with like-minded, ambitious, hardworking people. I’ve got that now at Vasion. Fine dining and good wine, or curry and a pint? Fine dining with my wife. How do you like to spend your spare time? Hiking in the mountains with my family and no mobile phone reception. Money’s not an issue, what’s your perfect car… and where would you like to drive it? Aston Martin down the autobahn in Germany and into the Swiss Alps. Favourite holiday destination. Any where with sun, sea and magnificent views. Hawaii was awesome. Simon Hill Oahu, Hawaii
