These platforms open up further possibilities for corporate customers when choosing their provider, telecommunications solution and, last but not least, IP devices. Greater choice brings other criteria into play, such as audio quality, design and functionality. Modern IP telephones can, for example, function as a control centre for office automation, as part of the intercom, video surveillance system or fire alarm system, or as a basis for monitoring objects and people. It is this diversity of use that emphasises the cost-effectiveness of IP terminals today. 2. More useful than ever If IP phones and the selected platform are interoperable, remote configuration of the devices via auto-provisioning is also possible. This enables an employee to operate phones in the office or at home via ‘plug & play’, with pending updates performed remotely by an IT manager – helping businesses to save both time and money. IP phones have proven to be cost-effective thanks to their hot-desking function. This means that no matter in which office the employee is based, when logging into any phone, all functions and settings defined for that individual are provided. This extends to the home office, where remote workers can seamlessly access shared address books, information about the status of colleagues, and all the features that distinguish business phones from IP phones that can be logged on to the switchboard via VPN (e.g. ‘do not disturb’, group call and automatic call forwarding according to specific criteria). If the phone is part of an intercom system, employees can activate the gate of the car park from home, notify the cleaning crew which rooms need to be cleaned at the touch of a button, receive alerts (‘man down’, object position and movement etc.) and react accordingly. These are all services that demonstrate the specific contribution of IP phones to the efficiency of a company. Lee Underwood is Channel Manager UK&I for Snom Technology.
