A lasting impression

The exact origin of the rubber stamp
has been widely debated over the
years. Charles Goodyear was credited
as the frst to discover the process of
vulcanisation when he accidentally
dropped some rubber and sulphur on
the stove. But the frst rubber stamp
is said to have been created in 1866
by JamesWoodruff, after he took
the techniques used by dentists and
applied them to letter moulds.
Since then, the use of mechanical date
and letter stamps has become ubiquitous
in banks, building societies, post offces,
retail outlets, warehouses and business
workplaces worldwide.
In 2012, Trodat the global market
leader for self-inking stamps, marking
products and laser engraving machines,
is celebrating 100 years in business. With
environmental protection at the heart of
its manufacturing operation and a history
of innovation – over the past century
– the brand has gone from strength to
strength.
It all started 100 years ago in Vienna,
when Trodat launched its frst product -
simple rubber stamps with wooden grips,
which were used in conjunction with an
ink pad. 1947 saw the introduction of
plastic date stamps but it wasn’t until
1962, that the plastic grip replaced the
wooden one on stamp products.
Today, the UK market is worth around
£40m. Stamps now come in a vast range
of shapes and sizes and are self-inking -
easy to replace reflls have replaced the
messy ink pads of yesteryear. The Trodat
Printy range of self-inking stamps (frst
launched in 1976) feature an ergonomic
design and non-slip rubber feet, making
them ideal for repetitive or frequent use.
The applications for which stamps
are still used today are numerous. The
Impressor range of pre-inked stamps give
print-like impressions, making
them ideal for signatures, logos, names
and addresses. Trodat was once asked
to produce a stamp of David Beckham’s
signature – presumably to assist with the
hundreds of autograph requests he has!
A wide range of word, date and
numbering stamps can be personalised
to individual requirements, plus there’s
a selection of security and ID Protection
stamps including models that contain UV
ink and which can be used to securely
label valuables and personal items at
home and at work.
A
Pen To Paper
favourite, Trodat's
brilliant pocket stamp – the Mobile Printy
– has achieved an incredible record, in just
one year, more than one million Mobile
Printys were sold and in 2009, it was
awarded ISPA and PBS Award – Product of
the Year (Frankfurt).
The EcoPrinty was launched in 2009
to meet the growing demand for recycled
and environmentally friendly products.
It is made from a minimum of 70% post-
consumer recycled material.
And fnally in 2010, Trodat completely
re-designed the Printy, introducing the
world’s frst climate-neutral stamp. The
Original Printy 4.0 is small, amazingly light
and made from up to 65% post-consumer
recycled plastic and thanks to Trodat’s
eco-friendly manufacturing facility, plus
the reduction in size and weight of the
product, 49% of CO2 emissions can now
be saved during the production process.
The remaining unavoidable carbon
footprint is offset by investment in Gold
Standard climate protection projects
recommended by theWWF.
