Improved device reliability helps Xerox slash emissions
Xerox has cited the greater reliability of its latest business machines and more energy-efficient toner manufacturing as contributory factors in the 18% reduction in the company’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions since 2002.
Most of Xerox’s GHG emissions come from energy use, including indirect emissions from purchased electricity and steam and direct emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels (e.g. natural gas) and petrol and diesel in vehicles used by sales and service employees. Since implementing an energy reduction initiative, Xerox has cut GHG emissions from company vehicles by 24% (compared to 2002 levels), thanks in part to more reliable devices and remote diagnostics.
The new WorkCentre 5665, for example, averages two fewer service calls per machine annually than the WorkCentre Pro 65 it replaces, contributing to 34 million fewer miles driven by Xerox’s 15,000 technical service engineers in 2006. A new, more energy-efficient toner plant has helped Xerox achieve a 27% reduction in GHG emissions associated with burning natural gas and a 13% reduction from electricity use.
The manufacture of conventional toner, which requires grinding, has also been improved by using an additive that reduces energy demand up to 22% per pound of toner.
Other energy-saving measures adopted by Xerox include the replacement of ageing boilers and air conditioners, better control of air temperature and the introduction of energy-efficient lighting systems. In 2006 alone, energy-reduction measures saved Xerox $18 million in energy costs. Xerox’s Energy Challenge 2012 has proved so successful that Xerox has now more than doubled its initial GHG reduction target from 10% to 25% by 2012.
